Problem with Panasonic viera link using optical cable

Standard Member
Help, I am a complete amateur to this, I have just bought a Panasonic TX40G10 plasma TV, Panasonic SA-PT170 Surround sound and have Virgin cable TV. The TV has been connected to the cable box using a scart, then the surround sound to the TV with an HDMI cable and have just purchased an optical cable to get the best sound which has been connected between the TV and the Surround sound. The problem is that to use the optical cable we have to manually select this using the surround sound remote, and the Viera link no longer works, whereas it was bvefore we connected the optical cable. Also the sound volume reduces about half on the optical cable- is this correct or where have I gone wrong?
