Problem with Album Artists

In a bid to tidy up my iTunes music collection, I've updated all compilations so that each track has 'Various Artists' in the Album Artist field. This has worked in so far as iTunes no longer duplicating albums in cover flow, etc, but it has unfortunately filled the artists list on my iPhone with 'Various Artists' under nearly every letter.

Any ideas on how to ensure they don't appear in the iPhone's artist lists? Or at least under the letter 'V' which is where I'd expect...?

Do you have "Group by Album Artist" switched on in the music settings of the iPhone ?
