Problem cinnecting Hitachi 19WDVB to PC

I just brought a Hitachi 19WDVB from Currys management special (it had no box, remote or instruction manual). I set up the freeview and I'm happy with the picture but I can't find the right setting for getting a sharp PC desktop.

Searching the internet I can't find a manual, the only info I've found says the native panel resolution is 1200x1080 but I can't select this resolution in the graphics control panel as it is not available (ATI 9600 card). The highest resolution available is 1024x768 but the picture is blurred due to the poor scaling job by the panel.

Any ideas how to improve the PC picture?

The TV also has an HDMI socket but I cannot get any picture using a DVI to HDMI cable??
