Pro ject and speakers

Hello,
I'm thinking about buying a pro ject essential II and everyone says I can connect it to speakers.
I already have the harman kardon soundstick wireless II. What do I need to connect the two things? I've heard about pre-amps and phono(something), but i have no idea what they do

If you get the Project Essentials Phono USB version it comes with a built in phono pre-amp; otherwise you'll need to get an external pre-amp.

The pre-amp is required to increase the very small output level from a phono cartridge to the higher level needed by a standard line level input (such as the HK Soundstick need).
