Prismasonic H500 1st impression

My H500 lens was delivered by DHL on Wednesday but I didn't have a
chance to play with till last night.
Its a very well engineered bit of kit and was not the nightmare to
install that I thought it would be even though the instructions are brief.
I was expecting my new screen to arrive on Wed as well but BA would
not allow a 12ft box to be classed as excess baggage and didn't
let my pal take it on the flight so I am having it shipped over.
I have hastily painted a 125" x 53" screen thats bordered
with 2" black tape so I can at least get some idea of whats what.
I have the projector mounted on a bit of inch thick MDF and have
used the guides from an old kitchen drawer to make the lens assembly
easily moveable out of the projectors light path. The projector is
on top of a filing cabinet and projects through a hatch in my study
into the theatre room.
I used Gladiator for the initial viewing test and first I zoomed the
21/9 image to fill the painted screen. The image was very watchable
but screendoor was very apparent from 1x screen width (10ft).
I was pleased and surprised to find out that my PLV70 will
scale/squeeze the image suitably without the need for an external
scaler. Next I moved the H500 into place and watched the same scene
this time with no zoom and feeding the projector a squeezed image.
WOW the difference was amazing! The picture was brighter (not that the
zoomed image wasn't bright enough) and screendoor was not an issue
unless I got within 5ft of the screen with a perfectly focused
image. The clarity of the image and 3D feeling was wonderful...all
I wanted and more!
So far I have watched Gladiator, the Battle of Britain, Jaws the Blue
Max all in their full 2.35 to 1 glory.
I have not observed any chromatic abberation but if anyone knows of
any material that is prone to show this up could they post what
title/scene.
Overall I think this may be the best investment I have ever made for
my theatre.

Hi Cam,

Now that you've had this lens for a while, how is it performing? I am torn between the H500 and the H1000 for my own constant height set-up.

How is the focus across the screen, and is there any evidence of pincussion distortion? I've been loaned a H200 and it has some minor deficiencies with focus, pincussion and chromatic aberation, none of which are major problems, but as I'll have to buy my own lens, I want to make sure I'm completely happy with the results.

Thanks.

Gary.

Hi Gary,
I love my H500 to bits. I have not experienced any noticeable pincussion or chromatic distortion using the PLV70 and H500 and focus is spot on. I am missing my setup as I'm moving into my new house in a couple of months so its all packed away ready for the move. I have a spare brand new H500 that has never been out of the box if you are interested. I bought it for a birthday present and the recipient then announced he had bought a Sony G90 so it got put in the cupboard..lol.
I have been tempted by a couple of new HD projectors but that would mean a new screen etc so I think I'll give the Sanyo at least another years service before upgrading. Best decision I ever made was going to a constant height setup and would never have anything else now.

Cheers
Cam

Hi Cam,

Sounds promising!

I have just ordered an H1000 (20th) so should get that in a few days, otherwise I may have bitten your hand off for the H500. Bugger. If only you'd replied sooner... you get 14 days trial period with the Prismasonic though. ;)

It would be great to have all three here for a test .... :)

Gary.
