I have just replaced one of the cartridges in my wifes HP Deskjet 2540 Printer she is not in and has her laptop with her.But as I have always been able to use her printer from my laptop I tried to print to make sure it was ok but it will not print. When I go into Devices and Printers it says her printer is HP Deskjet 2540 series (Network) does that mean it can only print from her laptop which is strange as I have printed from my laptop before as I could change from my printer to her's.How do I change it back and why would it change in the first place. Will I have to uninstall it from my laptop and re-install it.Thank's

There are two printers and we were both able to print from either but now the HP printeris not listed on either laptop. They were always connected wirelessly. My wifes OS is Windows 8 and mine Windows 7As there is no manual I found the manual on google butfor some reason cannot save it which is strange as I just click save and choose the folder and click save. One of the orange lights is flashing which seems to indicate ink problem but cannot check ink levels as printer is not connected. On my printer which is a Brother I can go straight to ink levels and check. Thanks for your reply and any more info would be greatly appreciated.

Is each printer connected to the respective laptop via a USB cable?

Have you tried removing the new ink cartridge you installed earlier, and either reinstalling or replacing to see if the orange light goes out?

No there are no USB leads being used yes have taken both cartridges out and put them back in and the orange light is still on.It might help if I could use a manual but I want to save it canot believe it will not save.

Are you accessing the user guide via this link - http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03847745

Depending on how you have your laptop set to open PDF documents, it with either open in the browser or a PDF reader like Adobe Acrobat Reader. Either way you should be able to save the PDF to your laptop.

Okay so it sounds like the printers are on the network (either wired or wireless), in which case you should be able to access either printer from each laptop without the other one being present. You just need to make sure you have the relevant HP software installed on each laptop. You can download the HP software from this link (you might need to change the OS to match your laptop) -

Yes we were always able to access either printer from either laptop ie I could print on my wifes printer and she could print on mine you just chose which printer you wanted to use.But when I go into devices and printers on my laptop it says the HP printer is a network one.Though not sure what that means.

Sounds like the printer has been automatically added by Windows, rather than being 'installed'. Try downloading and installing the software I provided the link for.

That link should take you to the version that is for Windows 7 64-bit, but you can change it through the drop down list against the OS version.

Well I have now got the printers as they were but still a problem with the printing the right hand side orange light is flashing which suggests either low on ink or cartridge problem. To get it connected I connected a USB lead to the printer and the laptop so now just have to sort out the ink and may have to get another new cartridge. Thanks for all the help guys. The light reference number is 8 on the control panel.

Have sorted out the ink query and the printer is now working fine. But she also needs to print from her Apple ipad and not sure how to pair them as there is no USB socket on the ipad.
