This 4 disc limited Collector’s Edition of John Carpenter’s 1987 cult classic Prince of Darkness has been stunningly restored in 4K.

This release is beautifully packaged with a stylish, newly commissioned illustration by Matt Ferguson on the cover. It contains a UHD of the feature as well as a Blu-ray feature disc, bonus disc and the original soundtrack on CD. It also contains 5 art cards, a newly illustrated theatrical poster and booklet containing original articles, photography from the set, production notes and an essay from celebrated film journalist Kim Newman.

The 2018 restoration of Prince of Darkness was made from the original camera negative. A full 4k 16bit Dolby Vision workflow was applied to create a 4K DCP, UHD version and a new HD version which were produced with the same high technological standards as today’s biggest international film releases.

The restoration and new UHD version was colour graded and approved in Los Angeles by the Cinematographer, Gary B. Kibbe (ASC).

Bonus material Includes:
  • Malevolent: Unearthing John Carpenter’s PRINCE OF DARKNESS: A brand new retrospective documentary produced by Ballyhoo Motion Pictures and featuring interviews with Cinematographer Gary Kibbe, actor Peter Jason, actor Alice Cooper, composer Alan Howarth, script supervisor Sandy King, visual effects supervisor Robert Grasmere, stunt coordinator Jeff Imada, Carpenter biographer John Muir, film historian C. Courtney Joyner, music historian Daniel Schweiger and Producer Larry Carpenters.
  • Intro by John Carpenter – an interview with director John Carpenter originally recorded for a French DVD release in 2003
  • Scene Analysis by John Carpenter - Director John Carpenter analyses key scenes from Prince of Darkness, in an interview from 2003
  • Audio commentary with John Carpenter and Peter Jason Sympathy for the Devil: Interview with John Carpenter - from 2013

Real shame that arrow don't release their 4K restorations on UHD 4K blu-ray.

They nearly always do not do this as each company pay for separate releases they are all competing with each other! Studio Canal have woken up to its not a good idea to licence these classics out as they always sell strongly especially around xmas time!!

I did wonder why arrow and criterion weren't offering films on that format, particularly as they do trumpet the restorations and the 'K' they were restored at.

The licence is format specific usually if the studio who owns the licence sees the demand is strong they then re-release themselves! For some bizarre reason most of the major Hollywood studios see these older classics as unprofitable! To them they are only interested in a title which sells millions of units it seems but I think they are starting to take back the 3rd party licences sold & do themselves as there is clearly a big market still for classic movies

Yeah, I mean I had laserdiscs which very much felt like a niche market although by the time I had them in the mid 90s they were a well established format (albeit not exactly widely owned) - criterion laserdiscs were something I relished collecting. I'd love to know exactly what is holding them back from releasing on that format given the history of the formats they've released on over the years. I've always felt criterion were specialist and this feels like a specialist/enthusiasts market. I guess it must boil down to cost.

Still have my Criterion LD's from the late 1980s when I started collecting ;)

Studios will not licence 4K easily as its most likely their last physical disc format. Lots of titles were licenced in the past which I bet they wish they never did (Fright Night (1985) for instance sold out 8K copies BD in a few hours!).

What is really frustrating is studios like Fox & Disney own lots of high quality classic movies from the 50s-80s & none have even made it to BD let alone 4K! They are just not interested in the format & clearly setting up in the background their own Netflix rival streaming service.

Cost is another factor its not cheap to do a decent 4K master and some studios like Paramount ONLY do it for high selling catalog titles from previous home video formats (they have Star Treks 2+6 Nick Meyer supervised 4K HDR transfers just sitting on a file server waiting to be pressed to disc for over 2.5 years now for instance ).

Wow !!!!

Prince of Darkness

Anyone know why Prince of Darkness isn't available in iTunes? Is it likely to be sorted out when these re-releases come out?

Of course this comes after the steelbook has been purchased...love the art on this one.

Collector's Edition being re-released on 20th September 2021
