Like Ed Selley in the podcast, this is one of my favourite Carpenter movies. Very atmospheric and the ending is special. I'll be getting this.

I'd definitely rate it as an 8 for the movie based on my recollections but my last copy was on laser so it might not stand the test of time. I remember one scene where the Evil appears (trying not to spoiler) as truly powerful - in the same way that in Prophecy 2 (might be1) when the angel Mark is asked to prove he's an angel and just unfurls his wings causing any witnessing it to collapse at his beauty. I'm not religious but I loved that idea. Anywho, I shall pick this up when Fopp has it at 2 for 30.

I think the score for this film is absolutely terrific, one of JC’s best. As said above, it’s got a great ending too. I know it’s a lesser film in his catalogue but it’s still a solid 80s slow-burn horror. Donald P is great in it too.

It is also one of my favorite films of all time, period.
It's a masterpiece. They don't make them anymore like that.
Overall (film): 93 (out of 100)

You've just said it: the atmosphere is tangible, extremely.
The music score suits the film perfectly, like a body bag.
The timing couldn't be better; @ the precipice of Halloween.

This film is underappreciated, unjustly so, very.
People have lost their mojo, the cinema essence, the soul of their emotional/intestinal crevasses, their spiritual loop.

This 4K Blu goes directly to the heart of my movie library, irrevocably, without extreme prejudice, irrefutably, one billion percent, unquestionably, irrrespectively of any type of interference from any type of transmission, not one little curve from the road ahead, in direct straight line to infinite immortality.

Apparently no collector’s edition in the big box for POD - just the other three.

Hopefully Studiocanal will announce one before the 26th of November when Escape from New York comes out. In the meantime my copies of The Fog and They Live arrive tomorrow.

I got my They Live collector’s set on Friday - the packaging is gorgeous, from the superb booklet to the great images under each disc. Lovely transfer too (on 4K and the very nice BR).

I watched the new documentary and it was a curious mix of a good range of people involved with the film reminiscing about its making, and film critics providing endlessly debatable insight. Very interesting though.

Really want a Collector's Edition the same as the rest but looks it isn't going to happen :(

I just hope they at least do a normal 4K disc release, because I'm not into steelbooks. My collectors editions of The Fog and They Live arrived today, and they are sweet.

I've loved this since the first time I saw it, I don't know what it is for certain but it's always been special to me.

The documentary was great although I think they did them all at the same time because Alice Cooper is in the They Live documentary but some of the score is from PoD....

Mine turned up this morning. Very good looking colourful steelbook. For once they did not skimp on the colour or gloss it's one of the better looking steelbooks with 3 discs crammed inside!

Gloss makes such a difference doesn’t it. So many steelbooks are a bit of a letdown for me due to dull matte finishes. The Tron and Rocketeer ones come to mind for me - great original art for both, with no pop at all due to incredibly dull finishes. It can’t cost that much more to press in gloss (or spot gloss) can it? Especially when people are paying eye-watering prices for the steelbooks anyway.

Glad this is gloss - cheers for the info!

Watched it last night. PQ is pretty weak sadly. Barely an upgrade over the BD. Colour is very weak & a lot of soft focus within the shots. Its especially noticeable when you look away from the centre of the screen I can spot a lot of soft focus off centre.

Most likely the source is faded so they did what they could with it. This is certainly not a reference quality release at all its barely more than a BD most of the time. Detail is a slight upgrade but that is about it WGC is wasted here.

      Hi

Just a note that soft focus off centre is a part of anamorphic lenses - if you look at John Carpenter’s other films of a similar period there is always softness outside of the area of focus. Shame to hear about the rest of it but I do like the steelbook!

The UHD highlights this a lot due to the greater detail available now. Its still worth getting as its the best it ever looked but the colour looks very faded most likely it required a wetgate restoration which it is just not mainstream enough to ever receive as those cost about $100K BEFORE the other restoration costs!
