I was wondering, as the tv adverts are dominated by builders, strutters, moustachioed opera singers and meerkats, have you ever used a price comparison website and if so, what were you comparing?

I use them to get an idea of prices etc e.g. for car and house insurance. Then I check out with providers directly and funnily enough they are often cheaper than the comparison sites.

Bit of a marketing flaw there then. I've never had cause to use one, hence the reason for asking in this thread; are they really useful and which ones are the most epic?

I do this then check the cashback sites, as they are getting a commission so I'd rather have it myself.

There are now price comparison price comparison websites [emoji23]

In which case 50% of what you pay is probably in commission :D :smashin:

How much does that free meerkat or robot cost you?

Recent example I was looking at, dual electricity and gas switch

USwitch - customer gets nothing
Compare the Market - customer gets a soft toy
Confused - customer gets a plastic robot
Quidco or TopCashBack - customer gets £65

Those free toys don't look like such a great deal any more do they?

So use the sites to find the best supplier, make sure you check a few. Then when you have decided, go through Quidco or TCB

Cheers,

Nigel

Agreed, Quidco for me every time

Just keep in mind when you're comparing prices, make sure you're comparing like-with-like.

It's worth looking at defaqto.com to compare service and quality of cover.

I nearly made this mistake a couple of years ago renewing my house insurance and when I checked found that, although I thought I was saving a few ££ a month, it was actually because I was looking at lower cover. When I made sure it was like-for-like, my renewal was actually very competitive.

I find specialised sites are best when they exist, the likes of IsThereAnyDeal for computer games. Many products don't have a decent comparison site. Forget trying to compare broadband prices.
