I've been a die hard Amazon user for years now but recently they've started to mess me around too much. The standard of their customer service has definitely slipped, in my opinion, which is a real shame because they used to be excellent at dealing with any problems that arose. The only reason I haven't closed my account is Marketplace, which is where I do a lot of my online spending.

So I'm looking to replace Amazon, either with one good all-round retailer or with several good specialist retailers (one for DVDs, one for CDs, one for electronics....). Play.com is the first that springs to mind but I don't think much of their customer service department. I wouldn't feel comfortable spending more than £50 there.

Does anyone have any recommendations? I know there's a page on AVF with a list of various retailers but I'd like to hear from you anyway.

(Sorry if this is an inappropriate post for this forum but this seemed like the right board)

I have used Play.com to buy a laptop for my Dad (for £300). My Dad told me it was delivered in the box without a battery and as I don't live near him, I took his word and rang them up to inform them about a week later. They said it wasn't a problem, arranged a date for collection (I rang on the Thursday, arranged for collection on the Monday) and he had a brand spanking new laptop complete with battery on the Friday.

Turns out there was a battery in the box it had just fallen out when he opened it in his haste and he hadn't realised! Now he has 2 batteries and one perfectly working laptop. Well done Play!

Play have always replaced every item for me if sent wrong, it has only been a few instances and only less than £10 dvd's but they have always been fine and I wouldn't hesitate to order something more expensive (which I have on pre-order now anyway)

To be honest, many are fine and I just normally look around at where the cheapest item can be and just check here or for reviews on google about how good the company is at delivering, customer service etc.

I guess any place can have downfalls, just the luck of the draw!

Play are pretty good and have always rectified any problems I've had, but for me Amazon are still far and away the best online retailer.
