Pre-purchase questions on Sony RDR-HX510

Hi,

I am considering buying the Sony RDR-HX510. I would be mainly using it to archive programmes from my PVR box onto the HDD, edit, then burn to DVD-R. However a couple of issues are not clear to me.

1) I have seen it stated that manually added chapter points (or their thumbnails?) do not get included in the final DVD. However if you choose to add chapters at defined intervals they do get included. Is this true?

2) I would like to daisy chain my Freeview with the Sony, with the Sony acting as a pass-through for RGB. However, for DVD playback, I would like to use the component video connections. Is this possible without any fiddling, or would I have to toggle a setting on the Sony every time I wanted to watch a DVD?

3) The majority of things I would archive would probably be films recorded from the PVR. Is it true that if a film is over 2 hours 30 minutes, the resolution on the DVD would be halved?

Cheers

Sony could automatically insert chapter marks on DVD Video Mode at 6 min intervals.

I agree, modes over 2.5 hours uses 352 x 576 resolution (half of normal 720 x 576). I have checked this with my PC.

I have a 510 and yes if you have auto chaptering turned on they do get burned to the dvd. However all manual choices are lost. OK the autochaptering will get you to certain stages in the film/prog quickly but I'd rather set my own up. I'm buying a pioneer next time.

Thanks for the info. The lack of chaptering was the most worrying problem with the Sony, but I think I can live with the 6 minutely automatic ones (much better than none at all, which was what I thought originally).

I guess you will always have to make some compromises, and as I would be using this as my main DVD player, I wanted a machine with the best picture quality to go with my Sony TV, so I can accept some small deficiencies.
