    The Grinch Region 2
I've got this disc from Play247 last week, and i'm not impressed with the picture quality.

I have just got a new projector, and was looking forward to the bright vibrant colours etc.

For a start the base black level (IRE) seems to high, meaning dark scenes have crawlies/blocky colour/mpeg artifacts.

The light scenes seem washed out, with a soft glaze over everything.

I have checked the projector with test discs and other films and it's stunning, so it's not that.

The last film i got confused with, was the "Matrix". I spent time adjusting my setup until a read it was "meant" to have a greenish cast over the "matrix world" scenes!.

    This time i know it's the disc/film.

So is this an error in production of the DVD, or is the image meant to be like this (ie the matrix).

Any R2 comments would be welcome.

    Any R1 comments may help!.

I've got it (r2 from play 247) and the picture quality is OK (40" projection TV) not the best but not the worst. I will take another look with a more critical eye and get back to you as I guess your starting to wonder if it's just your copy

I watched Grinch at the weekend and I noticed the same. It's almost as though there's a fine mist on the screen (I put it down the the dreamy look of the film).

I was a bit disappointed as I was expecting vibrant colours but what you actually get is kind of "pastally" look.

BTM I've got a Sony 36" CRT so it's not a projection problem.

    Regards,

Personally I've got to agree. I remember it being far more Vibrant at the Cinema, but on DVD it looks washed out and indistinct.

Disappointing for such a visually rich movie.

Phew!!!...........Roland, i will let you go free now!. You may return to your family down south!!!:D

The picture is OK as such, but i expected it to be a rich as "Shrek"/"Toystory2" etc.

Well at least it's the disc/film and not my setup!.

    Hello all
Got it at today but haven't watched it yet.
Just wanted to say that when I saw it at the flicks I thought it looked a little washed out.
For the type of film it is I was expecting the colours to be heavily saturated, to give it a 50's/60's Christmas movie feel
    ...but they weren't!
    Cheers, Paul.

OK Paul, I've gone back and relooked at this with my new HTPC set up and you know what? It still looks terrible.

When I saw it at the Cinema here in MK it was rich, highly saturated. The Grinch was bright almost flourescent green and all the images I have in Empire/Total Film are the same.

But the R1 & R2 DVDs are washed out, desaturated in comparison with crap black levels.

Very disappointing (I say again) for such a major release.
