    Hi

I know this might be a dumb question but –

I have an Arcam Alpha 10 with a fmj P35 – both 100 watts, and an A85 with a P85 both 85 watts. I have a set of Celestion A3’s the specs are

    • Frequency response (+- 2dB) 36 Hz - 20 kHz
    • Recommended amplifiers 30 - 300 W
    • Sensitivity (SPL @ 1m for 2.83V) 90 dB
    • Nominal impedance 4 ohm
    • Power rating 200 W
    • Height x Width x Depth mm 1130 x 280 x 400
    • Weight 46 kg - 101 lb
I am biamping them with the A85 and the P85 – does this mean they are getting 2 * 85 watts i.e. 170 watts?

If I put the fmj P35 on the bass with the A85 on the highs will the bass be getting more watts so the two sections getting different loads?

Any help explaining power amps greatly appreciated.

    Dave :)

Essentially.if the speakers are cpable of being bi-amped,each amplifier will see the same load, and so using two amplifiers of differing power outputs will make little difference,as long as both are of similar sensitivity, which your Arcams should be.

Ideally placing the higher output of the amps on the bass end of the speakers is best,as the requirements will be highest here.

That is true, however placing the higher quality (not a power thing) amp on treble usually works best. Not applicable in this situation though.

Or selling the two power amps and buying a bigger one and not bi-amping may also work better.
