Hi all,

I recently acquired a Denon AVR-X4400. Currently in 5.1 channel but soon to be adding (probably Elac) front Atmos. Other speakers connected are in my signature.

I am considering whether it will be worthwhile or not to set it in 11.1 channel and use the front pre-outs (where it disconnects the front internal power amps) to my (currently in a cupboard) Rotel RB1050.

The SNR of the Rotel exceeds that of the pre out from the Denon and with my X3600 the Rotel definitely sounded better.

Basically, do you all think the Denon X4400 will do the job fine or will the Rotel benefit? I know I could try it but it requires a lot of effort and hassle to the family and dogs to swap things in and out haha!

I include power consumption and weight in the figures - as these are often considered relevant to the overall oomph!

DENON:
Rated output: Front:
125 W + 125 W (8 Ω/ohms, 20 Hz – 20 kHz with 0.05 % T.H.D.)
165 W + 165 W (6 Ω/ohms, 1 kHz with 0.7 % T.H.D.)
Center:
125 W (8 Ω/ohms, 20 Hz – 20 kHz with 0.05 % T.H.D.)
165 W (6 Ω/ohms, 1 kHz with 0.7 % T.H.D.)
Surround:
125 W + 125 W (8 Ω/ohms, 20 Hz – 20 kHz with 0.05 % T.H.D.)
165 W + 165 W (6 Ω/ohms, 1 kHz with 0.7 % T.H.D.)
Surround back / Height1 / Height2:
125 W + 125 W (8 Ω/ohms, 20 Hz – 20 kHz with 0.05 % T.H.D.)
165 W + 165 W (6 Ω/ohms, 1 kHz with 0.7 % T.H.D.)
Dynamic power: 130 W x 2-channel (8 Ω/ohms)
190 W x 2-channel (4 Ω/ohms)

Power consumption: 710W
Weight: 13.7kg

ROTEL:
Continuous Power Output 70 watts/ch (20-20 kHz, < 0.03%, 8 ohm
Total Harmonic Distortion (20Hz-20kHz, 8 ohms) < 0.0
Intermodulation Distortion (60 Hz : 7 kHz, 4:1) < 0.03%
Damping Factor (20-20,000 Hz, 8 ohms) 500
Signal to Noise Ratio (IHF A network) 116
Input Impedance/Sensitivity 33 k Ohms/1.0 volt
Power Consumption: 250 Wat
Weight: 8.1 kg

Thanks,

Christian.

Depends what you want to achieve. If you are just looking to take some of the load off the Denon by using the Rotel as an additional power amp, then the benefits are going to slim. The Denon is more than capable of driving a 5.1.2 system on it's own, and using the Rotel's power amps are not going to improve the overall sound as you will still be using the Denon's pre amp stage.
