    Hi Folks,

I thought some of you would be interested in the following details of special offer DVD's! :)

The aptly-named “Poundland” stores across the nation have tended to sell cheap DVD's of the kind you wouldn't even want to own, if you were being paid to! However, they've now brought out a whole new series, with three films on one disc. The films are usually p*ss-poor, both in terms of enjoyability and dire print quality (with stereo sound), but just occasionally, you will discover something wonderful.

Just such an event occurred a few days ago. Most of the larger “Poundland” stores are currently selling a rather large range of these three-on-one DVD's. Now, before anyone groans, let me explain. The films included on the discs in the range, tend to be themed, and almost all of them are black-and-white classics from the 1920's through to the late 1960's. Most are of the so-bad-they're-good selection, but there are some gems too. The problem is, you won't always be able to tell from the packaging.

I bought five discs the other day – one “Sherlock Holmes” collection, and four “Classic Horror” discs. Despite the packaging stating that all the films were going to be in 4:3 pan-and-scan, this is NOT always the case, as I shall now list. This is what you do get:-

“Three Classic Horrors of the Silver Screen – Volume 1” (15), includes
    - Horror Hotel (1960) (in 1.85:1 non-anamorphic widescreen)
    - The Terror (1963) (in colour!)
    - The Corpse Vanishes (1942)

“Three Classic Horrors of the Silver Screen – Volume 2” (15), includes
    - A Bucket Of Blood (1960)
    - House On Haunted Hill (1958) (in 1.77:1 non-anamorphic widescreen)
-The Ghoul (1933) (in a rather brilliant MGM/UA deluxe restored print  )

“Three Classic Horrors of the Silver Screen – Volume 3” (PG), includes
    - Little Shop Of Horrors (1960)
    - The Bat (1959) (rather dire print with severe ghosting throughout – if you pardon the pun – but it is in the original 1.77:1 non-anamorphic widescreen format)
    - Bride Of The Monster (1955)

“Three Classic Horrors of the Silver Screen – Volume 4” (15), includes
    - Carnival Of Souls (1962) (deluxe restored print  )
    - The Ape-Man (1943)
    - Mesa Of Lost Women (1952)

For the sake of £1, and even if you only have a vague interest in just one film on any of the discs, they are worthwhile buying! Some of the films are quite rare, unless you import them from the US, and pay full-price. But many are similar to the “Something Weird” titles, available in the USA.

It might be worth investigating your local or nearest “Poundland” store, to see what other hidden delights in their range of DVD's, they have. There are about 30 discs available in the collection, covering comedy (Buster Keaton, et al), horror (as listed above), thriller (Sherlock Holmes and other similar detectives), romance and kids (original Popeye cartoons), as well as other genres, but all from approximately the same kind of time (1920-1970).

Hope this has been worthwhile! Just be aware that the discs may not always be as bad as they look! ;)

Is the Sherlock Holmes DVD the Basil Rathbone/Nigel Bruce variety?

    Yes.

Apart from the cartoons none of these films have chapters points, so the only way to fast forward is to use that control .
Also note that 'Woman in Green ' on disc CE009 is also a
    Basil Rathbone 'Sherlock Holmes' adventure.
