    Hi all.

I was phoned on this number today 07099885419 . The call lasted about 2 seconds then hung up. Now thinking it may have been some one from work, I called it back. I was greeted with the message that I was fourth in the que to speak to an agent. Well after about 30 seconds or so I just hung up and then called vodafone ( my service provider) . Aparantly its a scam to get you to ring back at a cost of around £3.00 a minute.

What ever you do, if you see this number flash up on your phone. Dont call it back. you could regret it!

    Dave.

had a similar call a few weeks ago from 07099851527
phoned back and immediately knew what it was and hung up instantly
    - my bill has it down as a 5 second call costing 3.5p

have since found thats its referred to as the 0709 scam
    - many will think the 07 means its a mobile so will call back under the impression that it will be at the mobile rate (in many cases 'free' with cross-network minutes); when in fact 0709 is now a premium rate prefix (capped at £1.50/minute)

don't ring back any 0709 number!!

0709 numbers are national rate numbers, charged at around 5p per min, maybe a little more if calling by mobile (around 10p I think)

If it was premium rate it would be regulated by ICSTIS, and here is what they say:

I personally wouldn't ring back anyone who hasn't left a message in the first place.

My sister got the same and she even got a voicemail left asking her to call a number with no other message or name given.

This stuff goes on all the time and ICSTIS slap people on the wrist at most. That's why these con merchants don't stop.

Same here, I also don't answer the thing unless I know who it is. If someone needs me & want to talk to them, they'll leave a message.

ICSTIS cant do anything about 0709 numbers as they aren't premium rate.

That said they don't do much about premium ones anyway. They did however implement a recent regulation whereby premium line services have to wait a minimum of 30 days before being paid by the telco's who supply the numbers. This should generally allow sufficient times for any scams to be reported and closed down before the scamster is paid, and so should reduce the incentive.

This doesn't do much to prevent the "legal" cons aimed at appealling to people's greed.
