Today (or actually last night) the moderator/administrator of the German forum at www.areadvd.de tells that this week we should have a new firmware at Apache which should remove the subtitle problem (what's this?), bring the PAL PS and still have the player region free.

If this turns out to be non-vapourware, this is what we've been waiting for!

    sounds good, rauer.

keep us informed. a hk dvd 25 for £275 now with pal progressive would be just too tempting.

Still no sign of the firmware on Apache. However, on another German forum it seems to be available unofficially, "hush-hush" by email. Strange methods, especially when it should be available this week any way (if it indeed is the same).

After some work&pain I finally got it, but had to promise "on scouts honour" not to tell where it came from.

I haven't tried it yet - don't unfortunatelly even have a PS display yet. The few Germans that have commented it seem thrilled.

If the firmware doesn't come to the Apache web site, we'll have find a site to host it for download..

News update: the Germans are now talking about mid next week.

If someone has a suitable web site, I can email the firmware version I have for download..

I can add that now I've upgraded my player's firmware with no problems. The menus are a bit different, bitrates are shown as kb's instead of b's, the default audio and subtitle languages can be set with a number code in addition to the basic ones. In interlaced mode works fine, is still regionfree. As I do not have a progressive input display, I can't comment on PS, though.

Please share your experience with the progressive PAL!

went to the hifi show in Manchester and the dvd 25 was being used in a few demo rooms on plasmas. a few nice demos of toy story 2, monsters inc and others...

excellent picture quality... very nice indeed.

asked the rep and was surprised to find these were the R2 versions of the disks and it was running in Pal progressive...

proudly told me that it was the only player under £1000 that could do this... stretching the truth a bit but at least to see that they acknowledge it as a feature.

£300 at the show... this is a great price for a player now with pal progressive for the UK.

until other players come out from Toshiba, Pioneer and Philips, Harman Kardon could sell a decent number of these over the next few months I reckon.

homecinemaheaven did have them for £275 but I think that was a special offer.

the show price of £300 is pretty good if you're in the northwest...,
cant find it below £349 on the net.

    Hi All.

Also at Manchester show today and can confirm that the HK room was playing Toy Story on a Plasma using a DVD 25 with PAL Progressive.

Rep. guy highlighted this as being a feature of this player.

£339.95 inc. delivery at Upgrade Heaven.

    Cheers,

    KL

Any places that do the firmware upgrade for you??

They should be allowed to get away with it if they are openly advertising it at the show.

Those of you that went to Manchester.

When you saw the demo with the player did they also prove that it was 625p being used.

I seem to remember from old threads that everyone got there hopes up when this player first came out, only to find it was converting the output to NTSC.

The other thing that came up in past was possible lip-sync on pal dvd.

    Can any of you comment:confused:

Like most here I hope it is 625p capable and has no lip-sync issues, then the panny will get a new best friend.

    :)

i have a PT AE100 projector currently attached via s video to a tosh sd100e player. Will the Harmon Kardon 25 attached via component using progressive scan be a big leap in picture quality.

Whats the picture and sound like from the HK 25. Also is it DEFINATE that it can now do BOTH pal and ntsc progressive scan.

I have one i can buy if so.

    Thanks

I have just spoken to a technical guy at HK spoken to them and he said that Pal ps is definitely NOT available at the moment. He also seemed to think that it was very unlikely they were demoing it at the Manchester show. It will not be available on the DVD25 for some time according to him, Who can we believe?

the number is 0208 7314670 for Harmon Kardon.

The person i spoke to had a foreign accent but he did state it can do pal progressive with some software. I asked him this on several occasions to be sure and he said yes it does.

I also spoke to someone technical at HK today on the above number and he said it will do pal progressive also and he gave me a dealer in glasgow who would provide the player.

I asked him are the current shipping players capable of doing pal progressive out of the box he said yes, but whether he meant they convert to ntsc and then display progressive I don't know.

I guess we won't have a definite answer until there is an official announcement at some point.

you can already download the firmware, so the first hk tech person wasn't correct.

its available on the web in that weblink of rauer's... downloaded it myself.

I didn't see explicit confirmation on the dvd player or player that it was 625p unfortunately, but it was specifically described by their tech guy as doing PAL PROGRESSIVE. picture was very sharp, not like you'd expect with the pal/ntsc conversion trick.

yes, the current firmware would do a pal to ntsc conversion like the tosh 900... this is completely new firmware though... compare it with the old apache one and this one - different file dates too.

the pal ps lipsync problems were to do with the denon 2800 by the way, not this player.

This firmware update definately brings up PROGRESSIV SCAN. Done it yesterday for a friend of mine who owns a HK DVD25. TV-Norm to "auto", Scan-? to "progressiv" and with Pal-discs, my Epson TW100 showed me 625p (50hz) in the menu:D

So now it has been confirmed by several ppl on German forums, by an Aussie on AVS and here by Lefreck. I guess we can finally begin to believe it does the trick? ;)

Next thing I'd like to see is a thorough test/review on a high quality display and possibly a comparison to other PAL prog players (Philips Q50, Philips 962, Denon 2800's & 3800's, Skyworth/Nintaus etc)..

please no.. not the Denon 2800s.. I can only take so much stress!:D
(see the mammoth denon 2800/ artifact thread if you have a week or so spare to read it.)

remind me also... the hk dvd 25 was confirmed as not having the chroma bug since it uses a mediamatics chipset... is that correct?
