I have two ports at the back of my desktop and wondered what they are:-

    One says eSATA

The other has a like a "D" (without the quotes) or P

Can they be used for a second monitor ?

eSATA cannot be used for a second monitor it is used for connecting an external SATA drive. The other D connector may be a 15 pin VGA connector in which case it can be used for a monitor, there are other D shaped connectors though, typically serial ports but these are uncommon nowadays. It could also be an HDMI connector or DisplayPort. If you post the make and model or a screenshot of the connectors we can give more definitive advice. Whether they can be used to support a second monitor depends on the hardware configuration of the computer, so again without more information, make, model etc it isn’t possible to say. With some models if you have a dedicated graphics card the on board graphics are disabled or at least have to be switched on in the BIOS

The other black port is indeed a displayport (which can be used for a monitor) and the other is a (purple) printer port.
If the back panel has an additional VGA port then it is likely you can use 2 monitors

Many thanks for your help - by other black port I am assuming you mean the lower right hand one.
