Could someone tell me what are the theoretical advantages and disadvantages of ported designs over non ported designs. How do they differ in the sound they produce?

Colin Miller of Secrets of Home Theater gave a very detailed explanation here and by the time you have read it you may wish that you had never asked :D

A sub with a port will have a slightly lower extension (ie. play lower notes) than a sealed sub, but in exchange for this will have a much steeper rolloff below this frequency. Additional extension has to be provided in a sealed sub by increasing the amplifier size.

When choosing a sub there are many more important factors to consider than whether it's sealed or ported (also remember that you can get Isobaric designs and designs which use passive radiators) as each design is a compromise in some way over the others in exchange for various characteristics. The important thing in subwoofer design is that the correct parts are chosen and built into the correct cabinet for them. :)
