I've been looking into how a lot of modern pop music is constructed and came across these two funny and poinant videos. See what you think :D

A word of caution: the first video has a single instance of swearing in it.

YouTube - The Axis of Awesome 4 Chords

    YouTube - Pachelbel Rant

There's a few that overlap or others that could fit into any 4 chord progression, but generally it's spot on!

Can see what you mean and agree pop music today sounds nearly all the same. Just nothing original these days. Too many covers or using samples from classic/old songs.

Worse music for me is dance, its all boom, boom, boom with keyboards thrown in and even that gets samey.

Thats why I prefer classic rock, metal and hard rock but no emo! Thats very samey.

That true of course, but the amount of modern hits in that first video alone shows how versatile those 4 chords are :D

I've seen the Pachelbel rant before and found it really interesting but that first one is new to me and is even more fascinating because about 20/25 of the songs are massive favourites of mine. Maybe subconciously I'm actually only fond of that progression!

Not sure about the first video. I think you could basically sing any song in a certain tone to fit those chords.

    However.....

I'm learning drums. I'm utterly amazed at the amount of songs that use a regular 4/4 rock beat. I read that 95% of modern music is in this format - I can well believe it.

    For example....

With your right hand tap on your desk four times.

As you tap say "one, two, three, four"

Ok on beats one and three tap your right foot. That's effectively the bass drum.

On beats two and four tap your left hand on the desk.

That's the regular rock beat used. Now fire up iTunes and pick some songs. Guaranteed most will fit.

I think this was mentioned by scott mills on radio one a few weeks ago when he was covering for moyles? He kept playing clips of it, very funny but he said that all hit records apparently had the same four chords although there were some he played that nobody seemed to recognise:rolleyes: They then had people calling in to tell them what they thought the 4 chords were but nobody could agree:rotfl:

I'm not much of a musician, but I believe the whole 4/4 thing goes back to medieval times. Its almost a cultural phenomenon.
