With DVD offering "perfect piture" and sound, and new converts flocking to the fold, I think we have a duty to discuss shockingly bad transfers?

The "Highlander" THX R1 disc is rightly considered to be one of the worst ever. What others have ya all found?
The unrated "Caligula" is pretty poor?
The R2 "Suspiria" could be better?
    There must be others?

R1 Braveheart wasn't bad, but it was a disappointing picture. Lots of speccles throughout the film.

    Shame that.

I know I keep bringing this up, but my award for the worst DVD picture I have EVER seen has to go to.....

    Boogie Nights R2!!!

Absolutely goddamn awful. My VHS copy looks better. [IMG]

The worst picture I have in my entire 175 disc collection is THE ABYSS region 4 (+2) PAL. It's a disgrace to the THX certification it bears. Very VHS-like (without the colour bleeding and noise) - seriously lacking in detail.

Army of darkness special edition the latest one was an utter disgrace (r1).
One of the best ive seen quality wise is the Thomas Crown Affair the new one.

I would have to say that The Piano Region 2 is the worst I have seen.

You see a Grainy effect in certain scenes in the movie. A Big Pity really seeing as the film is so beautiful.

It is Anamorphic though unlike the Region 1 version.

2 big disapointments for me were R1 'Robocop' & 'Braveheart'. Robocop was no better than VHS & only pro-logic. Braveheart pic seemed very 'dull' at times & the sound, while OK was...well...OK. No better than that.

I've got The Shawshank Redemption from those 3 for £15 packs that Woolies were doing a while back.

My VHS copy is way better!

DVD is stereo 4:3 with trailer, sub-plots, interviews and bios. (Sounds better than it is!)

My VHS is also stereo, but 1.85:1 and includes over half an hour of extras inc. trailer, production feature, interviews and behind the scenes footage!

Shawshank Redemption is dual sided. Try turning the disc over, you will get 16:9 then (Duh!).

It is also in Dolby Surround and not Stereo. The R1 is better though as it is in Dolby Digital 5.1

    Not on my version.

It is the original release and is definitely only stereo 4:3. I know there is now a dual version but think I'll wait for the limited edition!

The region1 version of Excalibur has been cropped to 1.85:1 from 1.66:1. Nothing wrong with that as its the exhibition ratio but they've cropped it too low in the frame. Its very annoying and makes the disc unwatchable in my opinion but I'm amazed by the amount of people who don't notice this.
