Poor laptop battery life on Vista, is XP better?

Recently bought an Acer extensa 5230e with T1600 CPU, latest GM4500 chipset and 6 cell battery. The advertised battery life is 2.5 hours but i never get more than 1.5 hours, why is there such a difference? Currently running with Visa business, would XP be any more efficient?

You should be getting at least three hours with an Intel cpu and integrated graphics with a 6 cell battery. Have you gone into the BIOS and checked whether the battery status is showing a problem? You might just have a faulty battery.

Vista (and Windows 7) should be more energy efficient than XP. The only downside is that Windows Aero may force your graphics chipset to consume more power. Try switching to to the Windows Basic theme and see if that helps.

Thanks for the tips, switching to Vista Basic View helped.
Here are some more:
1) Turning the screen brightness down
2) Switching off wireless function (only if internet not required)
3) Removing any game CD from the drive
4) Using the touch pad rather than an external mouse

Also read somewhere that the laptop battery can be damaged if you leave it empty for long periods, ideally these Lithim batteries should be let half full to avoid premature aging.
Hope this helps.
