Is polystyrene any good for soundproofing? A friend told me is it
It's superb mate, I've got enough polystyrene ceiling tiles to cover 2 ceilings, I'll let you have them for FREE!! All you have to do is come and remove them (from 2 ceilings).
its a fire hazard, so its not recommended, and it hasnt enough mass to do a real number on transmission loss. Dense rockwool and fiberglass do far better
I suppose it depends on what you want to do with it. I have seen sheets used to soundproof computer cases. I've even seen those packing chips used as floor/ceiling insulation. It is a pretty effective thermal insulator, but rather less so in acoustical terms. Of course, this is a moot point when you consider the availability and low price of rockwool - which is effective both thermally and acoustically.
Completely and utterly useless. What are you trying to soundproof ?
