Polo 1.2 Twist 2004

Hi, my wife's car is letting in water on the driver's side of her polo, it's also on the floor at the back on the driver's side.
In the cold weather the foot welled would freeze because of the water.
this morning she couldn't open the drivers door this morning due to the freeze last night. has any one any advice as i know it's hard to trace a water leak?
