Police Story Blu-ray Review & Comments

Do the surround audio tracks have weird (distracting) sound effects like the Bruce Lee Blu-rays did?
If so, I'll probably stick to the mono.

Very happy EUREKA! have released these. Who expected that?

With so many 'honesty, this is THE definitive edition' releases we finally have a Police Story release we can be proud to own.

Now, get those Project A pre-orders in so they release Dragons Forever as well :)

Thanks for the review. I remember really enjoying this although haven't seen it for 20 years. So i'll look to get it when the price drops.

The "smashing up the shopping centre" scene is particularly good.

I might have dreamt this, but wasn't there a rule where anyone in (i think) HK shown to be breaking the law had to be shown to be caught ? So there's a cut of the film (maybe post credits) with Chan being led away in cuffs for the shopping centre damage ? Apologies if this is utter rubbish.

One thing, could you please put the certificate in the film review? Maybe even in the heading? My eldest is 10 and i'm starting to think of films he might like, that do not involve cartoon characters. I think he might really enjoy the slapstick fighting of Chan, but at 15 cert i'll wait a bit.

I think the Hong Kong cut has him being led to a police van at the end and there's onscreen text giving a summary of the aftermath - bad guy is jailed, and Jackie has a disciplinary and suspension or something.

Project A part 1 is a 12, and from memory there's nothing too bad (as long as he doesn't try the bike or hanging from clock tower stunts ). Having a pirate setting rather than modern day, also helps you get away with a bit more as it's more 'fake'.

Remastered in 4K... then released in 2K. Arrow did the same with The Thing. Such a missed opportunity.

Didn’t realise they were doing Project A as well. Ordered! Great films.

And as hippo99 said bring on Wheels on Meals and Dragons Forever. Can’t have enough Benny Urquidez! His fight scenes with Chan are incredible.

This film literally changed my life. My mother's ex husband asked me to stay up late one night to record this as Channel 4 were running a Chan-athon over the month back in 1994 (Police Story, Armour of God, Meals on Wheels & Project A) to celebrate Chan breaking big with Rumble in the Bronx. They were the Chinese language originals with subtitles, none of that dubbing/edited for westerners crap. I was 13 and it was 11pm so I fully expected to fall asleep on the couch. It totally riveted me from the opening moment and by the end of the Chan season I was hooked martial arts movies and took it up in real life. As I've aged (I'm 37) I'm still a Chan fan, still watch martial arts films and also now a big MMA fan. All because I stayed up late one night to record this for someone.

Channel 4 also did the same with anime around the same time as it was breaking into the UK with the Manga label, had the same effect on me too - still a lifelong anime fan now.

Thanks for the review Cas and the chuckle it gave me to think of The Pink Panther parallels.
You've got a that's in there where it should be that - if it'd bother you.
Interesting you don't add in much about 2, I assume it looks and sounds the same as it's also the 4K transfer. The fact that the other versions of each film offer a direct comparison for the viewer to see exactly where the work has gone is handy or, annoying if you favour those.
The lack of LFE seems to fit, somewhat, the cultural rinky dink music/sound of the time that tended to beat you over the head with dialogue, slapping and snapping sounds, rising scores, shrills and cymbal crashes - an auditory nightmare for anyone with tinnitus, like my father.
The price seems fair for 2 films with so many cuts and extras in a limited offering.

What a nice surprise to see this classic. I was not even born when this was released. Jackie Chan is a living legend and i grew up watching his films from the mid 90s and be amazed by his stunts on screen. I remember buying my first ever dvds from China Town it was a very rare 60 film box set of every Jackie Chan film that he had made up to that date i wish i had kept that now.

Police story is no doubt one of my favorites along side Armor of God, meals on wheels, Rumble In the Bronx, Project A, Dunken Master i can go on and on. Check This this car fight scene out
Thanks Cas for getting this on here

Thanks, I reviewed the two films separately; the second review is done so Police Story 2 should be posted shortly...

All I want to know is does this have the original dubbed english track ?
I know its frowned upon and people like it subbed but I was just a lad when I started watching these and was disappointed when they re-dubbed them.

The dvd's i had did have the alternate dubbed audio but you have to remember it will also change the whole soundtrack. I would recommanded this to be enjoyed with its original audio and language

i remember this run chan 4 did, cept it was due to rumble in the bronx, rush hour was in 98 i too stayed up to tape them all while pausing for the add breaks. our funky jvc vcr had this code thing that set stuff to record on time and it never did

Watch the climax of the japanese cut included on this set as an extra and you'll have your memory refreshed :)

Hmmm, I got this on DVD in 2001 and watched it once back then; It may have been recommended by that great website Bullets and Babes which sadly died a death. I remember the film having plenty of slightly cringey comic/romance scenes I couldnt stand and never bought#2. Guess I should give it a go and if I like it this time round get the boxed set!

Are you sure it was Police Story? I don’t recall there being anything resembling ‘romance’ in this film.
Armour of God has some cringey romance but I don’t remember Police Story having it.
