Having recently played through The Longest Journey (old game) I found I really enjoyed it, can anyone recommend and other similar games produced in the last few years as I never really bothered with them until now.

Just off the top of my head you could try Syberia, Syberia 2, Broken Sword 1, 2 and 3. Farenheit's supposed to be good, though is less obviously point and click. Any of the old LucasArts games which you can get working with ScummVM. Erm...can't think of anything else at the mo.

LucasArts used to do a range of point-and-click adventure games that were great fun. To compare them with "The Longest Journey" would be a bit like comparing Chuck Jones cartoons (Tom & Jerry / Loony Toons) with Indiana Jones movies, but they were very twisty, and very funny. Grim Fandango was one of the better known and more recent ones.

To give you a sample puzzle from one of their older games, Day Of The Tentacle.... In that game you had to control 3 different characters, one in the present, one 200 years in the future, and one 200 years in the past. Your future character is stranded up a tree. To get her down you might try having your character in the past approach George Washington, and say "Look, about this cherry tree thing... I think you've lost it, I don't think you could cut down a damn thing." GW responds by saying "I'd show you if only there a cherry tree nearby, but unfortunately I can only cut down cherry trees, it's a family tradition." So you then have your present-day character locate a tin of red paint and send it back to the past, so your past character can paint the kumquats on the tree red, then approach GW again. "I'm afraid I can only cut down cherry tree-" (notices the red fruit) "Oh! Right! Well, I'll show you, then!" He then cuts down the tree, and because the tree has been cut down in the past it is no longer present in the future, and your in-future character falls to the ground, free.

Another challenge requires the character in the future to disguise herself as a tentacle (don't ask!). This is achieved by stealing an anatomical diagram of a tentacle off the wall of a doctor's office, sending it back through time to the past, where your in-the-past character gives it as a pattern to the woman who is in the process of sewing the first ever "stars and stripes" american flag. This changes history so that the american flag becomes tentacle-shaped (but still stars-and-stripes). Your character in the present can thus take the transformed flag off the flag-pole and send it to the future character so she can use it as a disguise.

    :)

lol Nicolas I've heard of DotT but never played it, sounds cool! Makes me think of Maniac Mansion!

I've had a snoop around Amazon and found quite a few of the titles you people mentioned going cheap, I'm going to try out Syberia first of all and see how I get on with that.

Open to more suggestions, they are so cheap I might as well get the lot it's a shame they don't seem to make many anymore I really loved TLJ!

Also give Sam & Max ago, one of the funniest point and click games, and one of the most overlooked!

If you can find a copy (plenty on Ebay) then The Longest Journey is one of the better ones out there. Sleeping Dragon is good, too.

Yeah, I had to download most of them. anyway, the one you should get are

    Full Throttle
    Dott
    Sam & Max
The Dig (Speilberg jobby :), Really hard to find, download)
    Monkey Island
    Monkey Island 2
Curse of Money Island (I think you can still buy these easily)
Indiana Jones & The Fate of Atlantis (Really hard to find, download)
    Loom
    Grim Fandango (Easily available)

Avoid monkey island 4 unless you really need to chat with murray again

Maniac Mansion is actually a hidden game within DOtT. :smashin:

I'm also a big fan of these P&C adventures with the Monkey Island games being my personal favourites although all of the ones mentioned are very engaging. Each of the first 3 Monkey Island games literally had me in stitches they were so funny. :rotfl:

BTW, I'm selling these fine leather jackets... :)

I never got round to finishing my copy of the longest journey. It was very impressive though, even if it did have plenty of flaws.

If you enjoyed that though, there's supposed to be a sequel due out soon.

Hehe, you reminded me of the great dialogue in the sword-fights in the Secret of Monkey Island, one of my favourite parts of any game:

"I'm not going to take your insolence sitting down!
Your hemorrhoids are flaring up again, eh?"

"I've spoken with apes more polite then you.
I'm glad to hear you attended your family reunion."

Sam and Max is the best beyond doubt!

Someone already put The Dig in their list. Whilst perhaps not spectacular looking now, there was something very special about it at the time, atmospheric and great effects and music without actually being a great game, just good!
