Are PMC Subs any good? If so any recommendations for the Twenty 24's?
vipers has a TLE I think, I am sure he will chime in. From others comments I think the subs favour music to films, so might depend on what you are after?
Many thanks - they'll just be used for movies - I've read good reviews of RELS and Velodyne. Also heard MA Platinum sub (seemed excellent but very expensive) and the new MA GX sub (very good) - just wondering how PMC compare to the well known sub manufacturers?
Page 3 seems like there is always something to talk about in the land of PMC
Over the last couple of years I've had the PMC TLE1, MA RSW12, Velodyne DD15 and just lately a REL R528, they all offer something different, I loved the TLE1 but I sold it as it was a little mis-matched with my MB2i's, it would work perfect with the 24's though.
I found the DD15 awesome, it really could go low and shake the windows, perfect for blockbusters but as I came from a 12" MA RSW12 I really missed the control of a 12" driver so in the end I've settled for a Rel R528, more than powerful enough in all honesty, it doesn't go as low as the DD but it is more than enough and at least I know the house won't shake itself to pieces
I went for REL R528 too and am very happy with it, it has added a whole new dimension to feeling bass, and it is set very low.
And the centre arrives! :arty:
Yes, I made the mistake of setting the volume to halfway when I first installed mine, I didn't realise they were so powerful, I thought there was something wrong with it as it really did shake the walls Now I have it set to around a quarter volume.
I also played with the R328 the other day, a fine sub also but with that you really do have to crank the volume up to over half way so for me the R528 is definately the sub to go with as it is so effortless.
Back to the TLE1 though, if you are after a tight punchy bass rather than an being able to go extremely low then it is definately worth demoing as thanks to the 2 smaller drivers it is extremly well controlled and probably the most musical sub I have ever heard.
i's going up in price? Boo. Guess I'll be saving a while longer then for my fronts!
Dug out a ten year old Marantz DR6000 last night to give the DB1i's a blast through a normal hifi seperates system rather than the AV stuff and was rather amazed. Will definitely need to sort out a decent amp to run the fronts for music methinks.
Marantz DR6000 was better than Yamaha 3900?
Last I checked the Marantz was a CD Recorder Still went through the Yammy. While it was relatively good 10 years or so ago, I doubt very much it's capable of anything spectacular. Gave me enough of a hint of what the speakers are capable of using non AV stuff though, which will definitely be something I sort out once room is no longer an issue and I have phased out the left over Mission stuff for a full PMC set up.
Regarding the subs, in the previous PMC thread I summed up that the TLE1, whilst a superbly music technical tour-de-force sub wasn't really for me. It's superb in what it does, but I can't recommend it being good value as a product. It pains me to type but it's simply outclassed by subs costing a lot less. I'm PMC to the core, but I'm not quite sure that any of the PMC subs could be considered value for money. Don't get me wrong, they're the perfect combination of depth, slam and ability for music but they simply cost too much - especially when you have to then bolt an amp on some of the bigger ones like the SB100. As said, Velodynes etc do the same for a lot less.
The Twenty.C ? If so, any opinions on it yet?
We used the Twenty.C at our open day a month or so ago in our cinema room, we only had fantastic comments about it tbh, obviously it has got the family twenty sound and it matches the twenty range perfectly, for me it was the clarity that really stood out, obviously important for a centre channel speaker..
I use a CB6i at home which is a fantastc centre but at a £1000 less the twenty.c really does perform, I guess if you have twenty's or Facts then the twenty.c is the natural partner and the CB6i for OB1i's and above in the i series range.
Hi Viper, want to sell your cb6i by any chance?
Well, my short lived dabble with normal separates ended last night after digging out an old Denon PMA 250-II and hooking up the DR6000 to it and after one track a swap of cd, my sudden recollection as to why I replaced the DR6000 was because it doesn't read anything anymore! 2 hours of use the other night and 5 minutes yesterday obviously finished the job off.
Have since been on the hunt for a replacement CD player and have been offered an ex-demo Cyrus CD6SE, and also been advised that a decent option for a stereo amp to run music duties and also act as a power amp for my RX-V3900 are the Music Fidelity M3i or Naim Nait XS. I don't suppose anyone has used these with GB1i/FB1i's and has any feedback on how well they work together?
What are the price increases out of interest?
Think I saw somewhere 10%?
Its different depending on the speakers apparently. Somewhere between 5% & 10% mostly though...
You are not the the first to ask that question I won't say never, but just not at the moment, I'll put your name on the list though
I bought vipers TLE1 ! I am running it with OB1i's as a part of a 5.1 set up. I moved up from a B&W PV1 and the difference was quite vast. It is fair to say that other subs can go lower and offer more slam, but it worked out great for me. I use my single system for two chanel music, multi Chanel music and 5.1 for films. The TLE1 works great for me as the room is not massive (4m x 4.5m) and it offers wonderful balance on music and I just wind up the level a notch when watching films to add some extra boom. Sonically it also fits in with the OB1i's a treat. The old story a bit I guess....it depends what type of sound you are after and what your main use is going to be, that and it's also difficult to judge (especially a sub) in a shop demo.
Hey R55, good to hear you are lovin the TLE1
How bizare, the list so far for my CB6i, if I decide to sell, consists of the 2 names above, normanu and R55 MTS, I'll let you guys fight it out
Had a really nice suprise in the post yesterday, a beautifully presented Ltd ED 50 page hard back perfect bound book celebrating 20 years of PMC
Coming from a print background it is clear to see how much effort has gone into producing this book, it's absolutely gorgeous with some fantastic pictures and imagery, I know it used to be the case, maybe it still is, that people would have a bible by their bedside, guess what is going to be by mine from now on, it's the only bible I need
.....never did like 'printers'
Rock, paper, scissors for Vipers CB6i then Normanu
Ever have anything to do with the used printer market? I've heard some of the stuff that goes on at the big trading events is like something out of the Wild West.
Blimey Normanu, I wouldn't stand for that
Can anyone explain performance difference between CB6 and CB6i?
I am finding 10 hours used CB6 at an excellent price. However like to know what will be missing in performance compared to i Version.
The i version is a noticeable improvement over the +. How much is the CB6 that you've been offered? I would be surprised if a speaker so old had only 10 hours on it.
CB6 at USD1200
