I had an impromptu demo of PMC GB1 at Audio-T yesterday which was very impressive for music and DVD. I would be looking to buy a couple of GB1s plus a DB1M-C centre initially and later add a pair of DB1s as rears.

    A couple of questions -
    1. Is there anything in this price range which is better - I am more orientated towards music than home cinema - e.g. Totem
    2. What is the ideal DVD Player/AV Receiver to drive the GB1 - I was thinking about Denon 3910/3805, but the bloke in Audio-T was suggesting an Arcam DV79/AVR250.
What is the best price available for GB1s.

    Thanks :)

Retail is £2,500 isn't it? In that range try the Monitor Audio GR60, JM Lab Electra 926, B&W 703/804. There are many, many options out there at that price level.

No prizes for guessing which I liked best, but I didn't try the GB1, just the FB1.

The GB1 is an excellent speaker with an rrp of £1,000 which performed admirably with music at the Bristol show last month.

If you are looking for "musical" speakers at about that price range you're spoiled for choice with excellent speakers by Dynaudio, Proac and Spendor that should be on your short list plus the Triangle Antal ES that recently topped Hifi Choice's group review of speakers in this sort of price range

Doh, I confused it with the OB1 :)

Floor standers around £1k? To add to Ian's list, try B&W 704 ex-dem, Linn Ninka, JM Lab Cobalt range (I haven't actually heard these but I'd be interested to know if anyone has), and perhaps the Quad 21/22L.

I think that the mad monk will have a busy few weeks ahead of him now with all these speakers to audition.

I've got a pair of GB1s hooked up to my Arcam AVR200 and they sound excellent. Very transparent and clean, no colouration.

At the price they're fantastic. (and I got my ex demo ones for£800 :D )

Look gorgeous in Oak by the way - Maple is sooooooooo last year!

There is a huge power difference between the Denon 3805 and the Arcam AVR250. Is the 250 up to the job of driving a PMC GB1?

Denon 3805 (and the 3910) is available for around £800, whereas Arcam stuff is usually sold near to the list price AVR250= £1000, AVR300 = £1300 (DV79 = £1000). This makes the choice of Arcam a much more expensive proposition than the equivalent Denon and maybe not worth the extra expense.

I'd go 2nd hand on the electronics.

On the power side, things are not always as they seem, the Arcam and the Denon are probably quite close in power output.

The AVR250 is definitely "up to the job".
Before you decide, you owe it to yourself to hear an Arcam and GB1s together:)

I've just taken delivery of a pair of GB1's and am driving them with an AVR250. I can say they are outstanding - delivering clear, precise music at all levels. Without doubt an excellent purchase. They also look lovely.
