Hi all,

I've finally put up my TOSH900E/PLV30/DENON3801 up and running this weekend. Very, very nice...But I've got a few bugs to iron out:

1.The TOSH has been modified and it now outputs INTERLACED and PROGRESSIVE from any discs.

Although overall picture quality is up to my expectations, R2 PAL discs viewed in PROGRESSIVE mode seem worse to me than in INTERLACED mode - Shouldn't this be the other way around?

Pictures are "softer" in PROGRESSIVE, to the point that letters from initial credits look slightly "fuzzy".

Also, in this mode, there are some jumps in the picture as if, now and than, 1 or 2 frames are skipped. It doesn't happen much (5 to 10 times in a whole movie) but it is a bit distracting since I kind start to wait for the next "drop" to happen. Subtitles are also affected, displaying some blank and/or overextended video lines.

On the other hand, in INTERLACED mode, the picture exibits a irregular but frequent vertical Shift/drop, which I've managed to cancel by changing the DVD ouput from S-VIDEO to RGB (Picture blanked at this point, since the TOSH only ouputs COMPONENT when COMPOSITE or S-VIDEO is selected as the base signal out) and back to S-VIDEO. Unfortunatly, this is only a solution until another disc starts playing.

R1 NTSC also seem marginally better in INTERLACED mode but without the mentioned "fuzziness" from PROGRESSIVE. I suspect the perceived better image from INTERLACED in this case may be due to the shiffting in video parameters when changing from one type of output to the other. The TOSH can accomodate slight adjustments in these parameters (3 memories for INTERLACED + 3 for PROGRESSIVE) but I have not come to that, yet.

    2. I've used the AVIA disc to set up the basic parameters in the PLV30 and I'm quite pleased with the overall result. One question though, how does the GAMMA parameter afect the others. Should I set up the basic ones and then adjust GAMMA to my liking? Or do I need to run the disc again, after the first run, once GAMMA is adjusted?

    3. Are the following options irrelevant to the final result?:

A. 16:9 output from S900E followed by WIDE selection in the PLV30 (a 4:3 panel projector)

    or,

    B. 4:3 LETTERBOX output from the S900E followed by REGULAR (default) selection in the PLV30

    Txs for any replies.

    Ooops...

The TOSH manual states 525p or 480p as PROGRESSIVE out signals.

The SANYO manual, on the other hand, lists the following, under "The Video Signal from the Y, Pb/Cb Pr/Cr Jacks": AUTO, 1080i,1035i,720p,575p,480p,575i,480i.

No mention of 525p here. Could this difference btw "delivered" and "accepted" signals account for the R1 PAL PROGRSSIVE problems accounted under 1. in the previous post?

    Hi Roland,

Keep holding back, I am in my way to sort out most of the answers myself. Which is a good thing since I did not get much help from this forum anyway...

I guess my initial post was a little bit cluttered. I'll start a new thread with a right to the point question. Let's see if "The Force" is with me this time ;).
