Plugins for MCE?

I have purchased Nero and WinDVD OEM from Quiet PC in the belief that there were required plugins for Media Centre to perform standard tasks. However on the Microsoft website they claim that Sonic DVD burning engine is built into Media Centre which handles all the burning of TV shows to DVD etc.

Will I therefore not need Nero? would installing Nero in fact casue me problems?

Will Media Centre be able to decode DVD's "out of the box" or will WinDVD be required for this?

Any furthur info I should know RE: 3rd party softeware would be appreicated.

I wouldn't let Nero get anywhere near my media PC. you need the sonicencoder to be able to transfer recordings to DVD in a form that regular DVD players can play. Doa search for sonicencoder.msi on goolge and you should be able to find a place to download it.

You must have some for of mpeg decoder to watch DVDs WinDVD is a good choice (it is what I use) although many people on this forum prefer the NVidia decoder.

My current favourite place for third party upgrades is

http://www.moremce.com/home.php

although

http://mcesoft.nl/index.php?option=com_frontpage&Itemid=1

is also a good place to look.

So is the Sonic Encoder not included with Media Centre? The description for the latest roll-up seems to imply they are updating this element, which suggested to me it was bundled.

Anybody know where I can get the sonicencoder.msi from?

I think it is part of RU2, but as I already had it installed, I can't be sure.

I found it by searching for sonicencoder.msi via Google....

It is not a part of rollup 2. It should be provided by the supplier of your MCE PC. It is on the suplimentary disc of the OEM pack of 3 MCE. If you built your's yourself you will need to do a hunt on google for a download site. Trust me they are there!

The sonicencoders DVD buring is very primitive with no editing functions it is also rather slow. It is simple though. Nero or some other DVD creation package (Sonic MyDVD, WIndDVD Creator, Arcsoft SHowbiz etc) will enable you to edit out commercials & create DVDs with menus & chapters.
