Could we knock these posts on the head please! What is the point in asking a bunch of relative strangers what titles you should pick up next time you're in town?:suicide: :boring:

How do we know what films you'll like? If you want an oppinion on a film or TV show ask on the Movies and TV forum, if you have a question regarding DVD features, extras or sound and picture quality ask here. I was after some recommendations last week and asked what other people had on order... but please no more "fill my shopping basket" threads please.:nono: :lesson:

You could argue you the same point with the other Forums like the Amplifiers, Speakers Forum. People love asking for other peoples opinions and to gauge whether their potential purchases are going to be worth it or not.

If 9 out of 10 people think a film is crap, theres a strong possibility that it actually is.

    I agree with James45 wholeheartedley.

Its seems utterly beyond logic to ask such a general question as 'what dvd should i buy', when, prices are so low these days and the avbility to trade unwanted titles is freely available, why not just buy anything that you want then if you dont like it just trade it on.

Further, peoples taste differ so incredibly, how can one recommend a DVD to someone that

    A/ They do not know

    and

    B/ THEY DO NOT KNOW!

Films are a personal tatse, what some people like, some people dont. If the question was:

What's your opinion on whats best and why between The Ring and Ringu?

Then fair enogh, sensible question asking for objective answers.

Otherwise it's all just a bit silly

Isn't it a bit like saying "Don't by certain magazines" as reviews in them are only the opinion of the person rating the film?

yea but the DVD forum is for DVD (the format) related questions not film based, subjective questions which is covered by the Movies and TV forum.

If you wonder whether or not you'll like a film, go to Movies and TV and search for the title, there is bound to be a thread with opinions on it, if not post your own thread asking people what they thought just don't start a thread here entitled "Should I buy this disc?", no-one knows!

seriously though I don't think "what discs should I buy" has a place in either DVD Talk or Movies and TV.

I have one URL for anyone who can't decide, or needs help with, what to buy:

    www.rottentomatoes.com

If you hear or see a new DVD is about to come out or you can't decide whether or not to buy an older film, simply search for it at the above site.

You'll get a wide range of views, a story synopsis and pretty much everything else you need in order to make an informed guess as to whether the film will be enjoyable to you.

As a rule of thumb, I find that any film with a rating of 45% and over can be considered worthwhile.

I see your point, maybe the Moderators could edit those thread titles?

People will still post rather than doing a search despite it being mentioned in the Forum registration/rules page. Just human nature I suppose!:clown:

Up until very very recently, the DVD forum used to describe itself as discussing DVD movies, so there was an overlap with Movies & TV. Now the description has changed so all movie discussion goes in Movies & TV and DVD specs, suppliers etc goes in here.

If you want to search for opinions of a DVD movie, then because of the history, you need to search in both the DVD Talk and the Movies & TV forums.

I see nothing wrong with asking for people's opinions on a movie, but the threads which say "should I buy this?" or "what should I buy?" are pointless, yes. I've also seen many people ask about a movie, receive 2 replies from members with no idea whether they had the same tastes or not, and then go off and buy it. Ridiculous.

I have asked about movies here in the past (e.g. remember that big Gosford Park thread?) but I merely enquired to what people thought about a movie and I like to see many responses to help me make a decision. Now I prefer to ask those who I know have similar tastes to me as their opinions are invaluable. I'd rather have one opinion from these people, than 20 replies from strangers who could like completely different movies to me which would make their opinions worthless to me.

It is obvious that there are only a couple of people on the forums with good taste in films. I would therefore suggest that any questions about the quality of films be directed to either me or Squirrel;)
