Please help

LG, as is a recognised brand and a decent TV

There may be others (full HD ones perhaps), what's the max budget?

I haven't seen either of these sets in action but instinct is telling me that I'd rather have a decent-brand HD Ready set than a cheap-brand Full HD set.

So in your case, I'd be swayed towards the LG. I've got 19" and 22" LG HD Ready LCD TVs in the kitchen and a bedroom respectively and I've been very happy with them - the SD Freeview picture looks great.

Viewing distance should be an important factor in your decision - if you're sat pretty close, then you may benefit from a Full HD (1080p) set if you intend to watch a lot of Blu-ray movies or play 1080p games.

If the majority of your viewing will be SD Freeview however, then an HD Ready set will be fine.

I wouldn't buy either without viewing them first !

Hi thanks for replying, £400 would be my maximum budget. I originally was leaning towards the LG because as you say it is a well known brand, but a few people have been saying that I should go for LCD rather than Plasma.
I will eventually be buying Sky but I wont be going for HD. However I will be buying a ps3 so I will need HD for the games and possibly Blueray dvd's.
I will be using this in the living room of my flat so I will probably be about 2.5 Meters away from the tv. Of course when I come to buying a tv I will view it in the shop first, Just thought I would get some more opinions before.
If there are any other recommendations then they of course welcome, Thanks again!

2.5 meters to a 42" is close in my opinion, especially for standard def, the picture will look pixellated. If you want that bug, I'd stick with HD ready as the SD will ve less scaled / processed and so should be better

I assume you are aware that very few PS3 games are full HD?

Why are people telling you LCD (wouldn't be the sales folk in Currys would it? )? For gaming, plasma is great as it handles motion better and there is generally less lag for gaming :)

If you can, check out the TVs in a more specialised AV store, like Richer Sounds (where you can also add a 5 year warranty for just 10% of the TV price :) ) Another few options, plasma and LCD (some with Freeview HD tuner)

I was told that LCD was better from some of my friends and people from work, but I think it's because they are probably misinformed about Plasma. I will probably be about 3 meters to 3.5 away now I thought about it. So for what I want which would you advise me getting Plasma or LCD? After doing some research on the net I seem to be leaning towards Plasma.
A few people have recommended Samsung to me aswell, what are you views on samsung or LG? Sorry for too many questions, Thanks

Have a look at the review section and do a search for feedback by putting the model number in the search box.

The Samsung C450 has a good rep for SD but can be prone to image retention (this is temporary), as can LGs. Panasonic make the best regarded plasmas but they cost more

All of these cheaper models are 2010 variants and stocks are running low. New models are hitting the shops now but cost more for the same / similar specs

I have no complaints about my 3 year old 37" HD ready plasma, great motion handling, natural colours

At 3.5 metres, 42" fine

can anyone help...when i looked in currys the bloke was basically saying the way forward is led...there didnt seem to be a great lot in the lcd vs led....however he sort of steered me away from plasma...yet my mums partners plasma (panasonic 42") has a really good picture and thats plasma...i always thought it was lcd....basically been looking....Samsung Series 4 Plasma PS42C450 or.....Samsung UE40C5100 40".....any help would be greatly appreciated...thanks dom...

Budget LEDs = LCDs with LEDs round the edges = slimmer, less electricty but more risk of clouding / backlight bleed

Which of the two models did you prefer the look of (bearing in mind plasmas generally look poor in a bright showroom) - you'll be the one using it :)

well...to be honest they all look the same dont they front on...lol!i like the led one...someone wrote somewhere that the samsung one i quoted is led backlit not just edge led,is that correct??but like i say the plasma here at mothers is a real good picture...i mean some of the plasmas in currys looked pretty cool...what would you recommend from a personal point of view?cheeers

Plasma for me all the way for a 42"+

If you think they all look the same from the front and you will be looking at it straight on, just buy the cheapest TV with a 5 year warranty ;)

I would doubt very much that LED is backlit, indeed no Samsungs were in 2010 (when the C series came out) :)

What will you be using the TV for?

again...the bloke said about blacks not bein as clear on plasmas...but the one here again..pretty impressive haha!they must not have them set up right i guess...ahh my bad thought i read that it was...for xbox really...watching films...the usual?! i always was under the impression plasmas were the dogs' haha!!any recommendations for plasmas?as for the samsung led one then? muchly appreciated for this as i am pretty indecisive haha

Blacks are usually deeper on plasmas, greyer on LCD...except under very bright store lights when the plasma can look washed out and they crank the settings up to something ridiculous on the LCDs...get a plasma home...there is no comparison ;)

Plasma also handles motion better than low end LCD and also has less input lag...so perfect for gaming apparently (not something I do myself, so not the usual for everyone ;) )

Have you been talking to someone in Currys perchance?

What's your budget?

right...i arent on the xbox all day everyday just now and again on football games tbh!and when something tickles my fancy...haha well not everyone but you get my drift...yeh he gave me the same pitch as my mate and his girlfriend, theyve got 42le4500 lg i think...so gather he does to everybody...atm like £400 ish...but obviously if i hang on could stretch it....

Suggest you start your own thread rather than hijacking ;)

Ok I am looking at the following tv's that have been mentioned in this thread.

Samsung PS42C450 | 42 inch Plasma TV HD Ready Freeview | Richer Sounds

Samsung LE40C530 | 40 inch LCD TV 1080p HD Ready Freeview | Richer Sounds

I am also looking at this because I have heard that LED is the way fwd:

LG 42LE4500 | 42 inch LED TV 1080p HD Ready Freeview | Richer Sounds

Would you say that this LED tv above is better than both of the other tv's for what I want?

Just a reminder of what I will be using it for;

Watching normal tv and sky not HD
Playing ps3 occasionally
Playing normal dvd's

So the only sort of High definition that I need is for the ps3
Though I would like to know if having full hd would also benifit watching normal tv? Thanks

Full HD can actually be detrimental to watching normal TV, especially if sat close as the extra downscaling can cause artefacts / pixellation. I have a 720p plasma, a few years old now, and SD, sky HD, blu-ray are spot on :)

Backlit LED may be the way forward, edgelit (like the ones you will be looking at) is not really as it brings problems like poor screen uniformity/clouding/backlight bleed

Of those choices, definitely consider the Samsung plasma

Nice one Vickster I will be looking into trying the Samsung Plasma out in a store some where, Thankyou :)

HDMI - not at all, a £4 one from Amazon is pretty much as good as hundred quid one from Currys. Scart more so, worth spending a bit more, especially if long
