Please Help - Video issue with Onkyo TX-SR875

Hi All,

Setup...HTPC with HDMI (1.2) to 875 Input 1 and then onto Pioneer 5090 Input 1 for display. Only thing that has changed is the 5090 is new (just over 1 week old). I also have a Sammy BDP1400 plugged into input 2 of the 875 and so switch between input 1,2 and 4 (TV optical output) on a daily basis.

Issue...for over two years I have used the 705 (first) and then the 875 (since July '08) to display my HTPC onto the TV (first a Sammy LE46M87 and now the Pioneer 5090). I have had no problems. Generally you turn the amp and TV on and you see the Onkyo logo and then after a bit of thinking up pops the computer screen in glorious 1080p. I have used this for Media Centre in XP MCE Edition and Vista since before even BBC iPlayer appeared on the scene...so quite a long time. I have changed the TV to the Pioneer and the handshaking takes a bit longer but it still works fine.

Yesterday I did the latest firmware update to the Samsung BluRay player which has just come out and, after that, set about recording the night's viewing. For some reason some of the channels had gone missing on MCE so I set about re-tuning. I restarted the PC and nothing showed on the TV (i.e. 'No Signal'). This happens on re-starts at times and a quick shuffle from BD Player to PC usually does the trick. I tried this to no avail. I turned on the mini LCD display I have on the HTPC and sent the picture to the TV (it is usually on extended desktop - i.e. 800x600 to mini LCD and 1920x1080 on Plasma)...still nothing...which is very odd. After this I went into the graphics card settings (onboard G35 express on an Asus P5e-V HDMI board with dual VGA and HDMI output - using VGA to mini LCD and HDMI to Plasma) and went, as I usually do, to set the mode from 'Single Display' to 'Extended Desktop' and the option was not there (something I have never come across before). Basically it would not do the job it has always done. I tried changing HDMI cable, changing the inputs around on the amp etc etc and nothing worked. EVENTUALLY, I decided to put the HDMI from the PC straight into the Pioneer Plasma (input 1) and hey presto..up popped the PC screen. At which point I realised it was the amp that was having a problem:( I also noticed that, apart from showing the screen as it should on the Plasma, that the extended display mode appeared again on the graphics card options.

So, this has all happened out of the blue from a re-start. The other thing I have noticed is that if I turn everything off and then turn on the amp and start up input 2 (Samsung BD Player - 1400) that when the Onkyo first displays the Samsung start-up screen (basically showing the Samsung logo on screen) that it is all completely fuzzy - i.e. all pixelated, funny colours and clouding. It then re-shakes I guess and the screen comes up properly as it should. It has NEVER done this before today. i.e it has always started and looked as it should. As this is something new also I can always 'test' that by plugging straight into the TV to see if it is something the firmware has done to the player (not done at this stage) and perhaps nothing to do with the amp.

Therefore two problems at the same time it would seem....HTPC screen does not show at all through the amp (on any input) and the Samsung screen, at first, is all weird. Has my REON or something bust or what? Anyone had this before? Is there anything I can test/do to try and fix (i.e. some kind of hard reset?) or is it a Genserve or nothing job? Also, I bought it just over 1 year ago (July 08). I was told that my receipt was all that was needed for the guarantee and that it was a 3yr guarantee with this model (there was nothing in the box to show this only what I had been told and heard about it on here). I did also do the online registration. Therefore will Genserve know this automatically due to the model?

Many thanks in advance....I really just want to find out what the issue is and fix it as it's a really important thing and I don't want to think it may get worse.

Please help, I can't live without it! Cheers

Hey Namuk,

Thanks for the reply. The firmware is as follows:

MAIN 87 1.07/08223A
DSP 1 SR8051/08214A
DSP 2 SR8052/07518A
DSP 3 SR8053/07820B
HDMI 1.01/07706A
VIDEO 07606EOO924

I must say that I have not had any odd colours on screen as yet (apart from the Blu Ray start up). I thought REON was always on unless you set it to 'Through'? Am I correct? I have always had it on 1080p I must admit.

Many thanks in advance for any help.

Regards

Dave:)

firmware is upto date:smashin:
when your Running Films at 1080p24 this bypasses the reon.

Hi Namuk,

I c what u mean about the Reon. This however is just 1080p from the PC so will be using the REON wont it. So do you think I may have a Reon issue or any other ideas? Is it worth me mailing Genserve? I dont know what to do at the mo!

At 1080p Reon will be used yes if you had a Reon issue you would get odd Colours on screen,
yes Genserve is worth a call GenServe

No problem :smashin: one question are you using 1.3 hdmi leads for av gear? imop i would connect the Pc direct to tv and let the Graphics card do scaling and Audio just to amp , this would be allot easier.

Hey Namuk,

Thanks for the new reply. Funnily enough I actually think the picture is better straight to the TV rather than through the 875! However it still worries me that there is a problem with the amp if it wont show the PC through it. Yes, I do have 1.3 cables (Chord silver 1.3).

i do not think it is amp personally , it will be down to the amp Hdmi Handshake (HDCP) wants to Sync with pc , try updating Graphics drivers. newer Nvidia drivers have Hdcp and show if your Hdcp-Capable.
But still give Genserve a call anyway at least then issue is logged .

Hi again Namuk,

See what you are saying...I think my graphics driver is up to date (it's not nvidia on this mobo but Intel onboard GMA something...can't remember the version) from memory.

Also, as said, it has worked flawlessly for 18months and now gone 'funny' all of a sudden. At the same time the Blu Ray startup picture has gone weird too.

Still, I'll have a play when I get an hour and see what I can work out.

I hesitate to post as I know nothing about anything when it comes to the technical aspects of home entertainment, and I don't know if this will help or not however I have just had a very frustrating couple of weeks after installing an ST5205 system which includes a 307 amp/receiver (not the one you have but bear with me) .I have a Samsung 46" LCD tv, a media player, Virgin XL and a Sony bluray player all feeding into the amp (HDMI) with a single HDMI cable going to the tv, To cut a long story short I had exactly the same picture problem that you had, sound was good via the sound system but the picture was the grey sort of pixilated mess then the screen going blank every couple of seconds as if it was hunting for something that I think you are describing. It seemed to cure itself when I saw that I was feeding the TV via the HDMI DVI socket, took it out of that one and fed it into one of the straight HDMI sockets. Instant success, been good for a week now.
I'm sorry if I've misunderstood what your problem is, but I thought this might help.
