sounds to me like the disc drives knackered.

and these things any a simply swap over are they.

due to the board and drive needing to be matched or a key

so its pretty much knackered then?
would i be better off selling it on eb*y as fauly and putting the money toward a new one rather than getting it fixed?
    thanks

    Before giving up I would

    (a) Try a disk cleaner - maybe a bit of dirt on the laser

    (b) Given that it is only 14 months old, take it back to the store and demand that they fix or replace it under the Sales of Goods Act (SOGA).

    Cheers,

    Nigel

Certainly worth a try, 14 months and the dvd drive stopped working isn't good enough for the price you paid.

The lack of a box shouldn't be an issue.

    Read this thread

    http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=479165

Basically, the SOGA states that it is the sellers responsibility to ensure that goods that you buy last a reasonable amount of time.

This could be upto 6 years, it all depends on the product. It all comes down to what a court would think reasonable - if it were a £10 electric toothbrush it might feel that one year is an acceptable lifetime but you could be certain that for a £280 games console most would consider at least 2 years and probably more.

You have to be persistent because most retailers will try and say they are only liable for 12 months. The thread above has good advice on the steps you should take.

The main thing is to keep calm and polite, state and record the facts and eventually you will win.

Where did you buy it from?

    Cheers,

    Nigel

You should be okay with Game.

Almost certainly, when you go to the store you won't get any joy from the assistance nor their manager. But be polite, take their names and then follow it up with the head office.

Just stand your ground and at the very worst you will win in the Small Claims Court but I would be extremely surprised if they let it get that far.

    Cheers,

    Nigel
