If you've got a PS2 then you obviousley have some money, so i'd buy a PROPER dvd and not something that pretends to be one. There are alot of budget players out there (£100-£150) that have no trouble with RCE discs, it will save you pulling your hair out when every other disc you put in wont work.
Buy a budget player and use the PS2 for it's primary purpose 'games' .

I already own A dedicated region 1 player which is great but people knock the PS2 for DVD playback when it's as good as My region 2 Sony 735 dvd player. All you need is to connect via component av which I have connected to my Toshiba 36zp18p No PROBS.My knock was with Sony for there software update giving the RCE world map, making the DVD region X that many people have paid £20 for not work.
So if you wanna buy the offical Sony sexy DVD remote note that you can't use it with out installing the software first, then you can't playback r1 titles. SONY BIG BROTHER
Oh ben i do have a few quid but always spend it on AV-GEAR So SHOW ME THE MONEY!............

I know it's a bit late as you've already bought the Sony remote but I have Region X & joytects mini remote for my PS2 and they work fine together without you having to upgrade to Sony's new DVD software

I am after using the PS2 as a R2 only player for a second TV in the house ( already have a multi-region player and an r1 only machine ) and was interested in the region X thing as it supposedly stops the green screen RGB thing.

However for the above to happen do you have to play the CD b4 putting in your DVD or will the green screen be banished once the cd is run for the first time ?

If not then I suppose it will be better just to use s/video connector

DVD Region X will get rid of the RGB green mask on the PS2. You need to enter some codes that you can get from here, along with instructions.

    http://www.dvdregionx.com/english/x_key_codes.htm

Once you entered the codes the they are stored on the Region X dongle that goes into one of the memory card slots, or on the momory card itself if you have the latest version of Region X, so you only have to do this once. However you DO need to load the Region X CD first, everytime you want to play a DVD without the green mask, even for R2.

They now have codes for the version 2.10 DVD player (that the Sony remote control software updates the PS2 to), if you are using one. I got the Sony remote at the weekend, and I've had no problems once I entered the codes for the new version DVD player. One thing to note though, is that even though the remote software updates the dvd player version, when you load the Region X CD, it still show's the old version number in the corner of the screen. Ignore this, and make sure you enter the codes for the new one - they are listed under "Euro Remote" on the web page.

I've played R1 copies of Hannibal and Leon - Directors Cut so far, and not had any sign of a RCE world map. I don't know if this is because these aren't RCE protected discs, or because the new codes take that off as well as the green mask, so I don't know whether this will help with the original question on this thread, but it may be worth a go if you've not tried it allready.

Apparently, these are the new codes:

    E79A9A5F 83B731E3
E7979617 83BC31E3
679522DB 67B551D0
6795FE53 67B551D0

I don't have a DVD Region X, but I've heard that these codes do the trick with the new drivers...hope this helps.

Thanks to everyone for the information on this thread.

I`ve added the codes for the new DVD version software included with the Sony remote and they work a treat.

    Just a couple of points:
1. The DVD playback on the PS2 is as good as my dedicated player when outputting RGB.
2. The new software included with the Sony remote enables certain trickplay functions not previously available eg Repeat A-B, along with one touch access to menus etc

    Cheers
