Is the PlayStation 4 only 18 months away? Although the rumour is certain to be scorched by Sony, web reports have surfaced that suggest a revised version of the PlayStation 3 designed specifically to act as an audio-visual hub, perhaps even a home entertainment server, is under development. This would not be the first time that [...]

So basically Sony may bring out a version of the PS3 in a box that looks more like a normal piece of av equipment and aim it towards that market rather than towards gamers.

The current PS3 is more than capable of doing all of this given the right software so trying to claim this would be a 'playstation 4' i.e. a successor to the PS3 is clearly nonesense

Because it can't be learned by a universal IR controller.

This is the biggest reason for me not buying a PS3 as a BluRay player.

I think that there was a severe embeishment with the article - probably to encourage traffic to thier site.

While I am unsure of the validity of such a device, it will most certainly be the Sony alternative to the 360 elite.

Ken Kutaragi has went on record last year (well before he 'retired') and said that he anted an AV-centric version f the PS3 that was essentially a serious home media centre hub.

Is this £18 blu-ray remote IR then? I thought it was bluetooth.

A bluetooth remote can't be integrated with my Pronto.
Without my Pronto, nobody else would be able to operate my complex AV system.

Bluetooth remote = pain in the backside.

As far as I know it is bluetooth. PS3 does not have a IR receiver, but I have wondered if a third-party USB IR receiver will be released? I use the controller at the mo, not ideal but it works.

Those prontos look good- I must have 10 remotes in my living room!:(

    Bit expensive for me though.

I had a stupid amount of remotes until I got a Harmony, can't imagine how I would cope without one now.

There is a work around for using IR on the PS3 using a IR reciever made for the PS2 but it looks messy.

Maybe the Harmony 895 then and use the RF-IR blasters to hide the mess and to bypass bluetooth.

Nope as the 895 use Z-wave not bluetooth protocol, did SOny produce a PS2 that was buit into a 5.1 av system just like their DAV systems? but wasnt it only released in Japan? SOny and Integration dont go together everytime they try they fail making everything too proprietry they will make the whole lot bluetooth and produce a £300 bluetooth and IR remote which will come up short........

The PS2 USB IR dongle does work, but is indeed messy, and does not give a complete command set. You don't even get 'next chapter' or menu up/down IIRC, so it's effing useless as part of an integrated system. Poor thinking by Sony here, the thing is otherwise a top product, but if they are serious about it as a blu ray player, this is a tragic error.
