Playstation 4 is (up to now) my choice this gen. What were your previous choices?

    So impressed with the PS4.

For a bit of fun I decided to look back over the generations to pick out my favourites (in bold) - latest to oldest. I'm also aware that there were other machines around during these era's but these were the "stand out" consoles. I'm also not including PC, Spectrum, C64, Vic 20, Amiga, ST, Vectrex etc - purely consoles but give them a mention if they were your over-riding choice.

No flaming / arguments please. Just pick your favourite and the reason. I'm aware there are some timeline crossovers. Just pick your favourite ;)

Put an X in brackets if you owned the machines at the time.

For reference Video game console - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    Eighth Generation
    Wii U (x)
    Xbox One (x)
    PS4 (x)

Incredibly impressed this generation with Sony who seem to have learned from their previous mistakes. Early days though...

    Seventh Generation
    Wii (x)
    Xbox 360 (x)
    PS3 (x)

Hands down the 360. Only used the PS3 as a Blu player and for Resistance. Now using much more thanks to PS+

    Sixth Generation
    Dreamcast (x)
    PS2 (x)
    Nintendo Gamecube (x)
    Xbox (x)

Another MS win for me. Loved the original Xbox and once hacked was at the time the ultimate media centre (XBMC)

    Fifth Generation
    Atari Jaguar
    3DO (x)
    PC-FX
    Sega 32x
    Sega Saturn (x)
    Playstation (x)
    N64 (x)

Sony got it so right this generation. 3D graphics arrived and I hammered my PS until the N64 came along late that gen. Then it was Goldeneye all the way! Close call as I also loved my 3DO. Probably my favourite generation as I spent many hours on those 3 machines. Again, an extremely close call between the PS, 3DO and N64.

    Fourth Generation
    Sega MegaDrive / Genesis (x)
    Neo Geo
    Super Nintendo (x)

Absolutely loved my Snes. Would have no doubt enjoyed the Neo had it not been so prohibitively expensive. Mortal Kombat for the win.

    Third Generation
    Nintendo NES
    Sega Master System
    Atari 7800

No choice from me this generation as I was a Commodore 64 addict. Didn't own any of this generation's machines.

    Second Generation
    Atari VCS2600
    (x)
    Intellivision
    ColecoVision

Oh my Atari. My lovely Atari. So many hours spent with Mum, Dad, Sister, Aunts and Uncles. Proud to have lived through this generation. Was insanely jealous of friend with Intellivision though. CBS Colecovision just wasn't main stream enough but would have loved Donkey Kong!

    First Generation
    Binatone 4 in 1
    (x)
    Grandstand
    Philips Videopac
    Pong clones

This is where it all started. My Dad bringing home a Binatone 4 in 1. God bless you Dad! So many hours spent in front of the TV during the 70's. This is where my love for all things video games started.

My, haven't we come a long way.

    Colecovision
    NES
    SNES
    N64
    PS1
    XBox 3 years
    PS2 4 years
    X360 (RROD) 2 years then PS3 5 years.
    PS4

Once upon a time Nintendo had my heart... but they stomped on it and broke it when they killed Super Mario Kart on the SNES by adding all this extra stupid crap. Then Mario 64 and Goldeneye... best years of my LIFE!!!

Oh Man, me and Xashark would have had some heated debates on the playground ;) I still remember speccy v 64 and Amiga v Atari 'discussions' well before the term fanboy was even thought of :D

First game I played was some duck shoot thing on a Commodore PET in school :)

    First Gen - Granstand Games
I had a few of these, Munchman (pacman clone), TRON (based on the film) and Firefox (space shooter).

    Second/Third Gen - Spectrums
I started off with a 16k Spectrum, then a 48k and then went onto an Amstrad made 128k +2.

    Fourth Gen - SNES/Amiga
I sold a load of Spectrum stuff to raise the money for a SNES. Weirdly I never owned any of the traditional Mario games. I mostly played Streetfighter II, Mario Kart and Bomberman (with the multitap). I then got a Commodore Amiga so played most of my games on that.

    Fifth Gen - Playstation/PC
I got a Playstation on the UK launch day with Wipeout. It felt like a proper next gen machine, being so advanced compared to what had come before.

    Sixth Gen - Xbox
I came to this gen pretty late on. I bought a gaming PC around the time of Half Life, Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament so that took up my gaming time. Once that became too old for games I drifted away from gaming for a while. I managed to save up enough for a Crystal Xbox with PGR2 and my love of gaming was rekindled.

    Seventh Gen - Xbox 360/PS3/Wii
I bought an Xbox 360 in the April after they launched so most of last gen was spent on that. I did have a Wii for all of two weeks, but it got stolen when our house was broken into. I got the PS3 a few years back in a deal when I bought our TV. Starting off as a massive Xbox fan, if I was only able to have had one of the machines from last gen it would be PS3 that I'd choose.

    Eighth Gen - PS4
Initially I was pretty underwhelmed by both the XB1 and PS4 and was thinking of getting a gaming PC instead. Looking into the costs and how I like to play games, I chose to go with the PS4 instead. Normally I wouldn't have been able to justify the cost of a new console, but I managed to trade in all of my Xbox stuff to cover the cost of it. Now that I have it, I'm made up with my decision and look forward to seeing how the format improves over the next few years.

EDIT: There was a Sega Game Gear and a PSP in there somewhere too :)

Not sure how these fit into 'generations', but here are mine:

    C64
    Amiga 500
    Mega Drive
    32x
    MegaCD
    N64
    Doctor64 :)
    GameCube
    PS2
    PS3
    PS4

Never had a Microsoft console, they just never appealed to me.

    A great thread idea!

    Eighth Generation
    Wii U (x)
    Xbox One
    PS4 (x)

Not owned the Xbox One but for me the PS4 just does everything right. It looks good, performs very well, has a clear, snappy and attractive UI, a fantastic pad, great social integration, the ability to share and stream your gaming, videos and screenshots, the fantastic remote play feature, a potentially great games line up, a sleek and attractive console design, a relatively low price point and of course is part of the PS+ ecosystem. Just about my perfect games console.

    Seventh Generation
    Wii (x)
    Xbox 360 (x)
    PS3 (x)

Liked the Xbox early doors and the Wii had some fantastic moments, but overall exclusives like MGS4, Uncharted 2, The last of Us, GT6, GOW3 etc. made it the console to own for me. Chuck in the amazing PS+ for the past couple of years and bar the first 2-3 years of the generation (one of which it wasn't even out) then it wins hands down for me personally.

    Sixth Generation
    Dreamcast (x)
    PS2 (x)
    Nintendo Gamecube (x)
    Xbox (x)

I started off the generation as a huge Sega fan boy, hating the PS2 for killing off the DC. Games like PES, GTA3 and GT3 saw me fall in love with the console however and to be fair, you just couldn't beat the PS2 in terms of games. I did like the Xbox as well towards the of the generation however.

    Fifth Generation
    Atari Jaguar
    3DO
    PC-FX
    Sega 32x
    Sega Saturn (x)
    Playstation (x)
    N64 (x)

A close one between the PS1 and N64, but with games like Zelda OOT, Mario 64, Goldeneye etc. the N64 wins for having a selection of some of the best games ever created released for it.

    Fourth Generation
    Megadrive (x)
    Neo Geo
    Super Nintendo (x)

    Before the 4th geni owned a PC, Amiga 1200, Amiga 500, Spectrum +3 and a Dragon 32.

I came into gaming in the 16-bit era so I go

    Eighth Generation
    Wii U
    Xbox One (x)
    PS4 (x)

Currently PS4 is my first choice but going by the current power advantage it will most likely stay that way.

    Seventh Generation
    Wii (x)
    Xbox 360 (x)
    PS3 (x)

    360 was my go console.

    Sixth Generation
    Dreamcast
    PS2 (x)
    Nintendo Gamecube (x)
    Xbox

Went straight from the PlayStation to the PS2 in 2000. I bought a Gamecube while I was at Uni a few years later mainly for Smash Bros and the console didn't take up much room. But the PS2 was my go to console.

    Fifth Generation
    Atari Jaguar
    3DO
    PC-FX
    Sega 32x
    Sega Saturn
    Playstation (x)
    N64

    Made the switch to Sony.

    Fourth Generation
    Sega MegaDrive / Genesis
    (x)
    Neo Geo
    Super Nintendo

My first console. I didn't get much choice my parents got it for me (thanks mum and dad!). Also had an Amiga 1200 somewhere around the Mega Drive 16 bit era which I also loved.

    8th Generation
    Playstation 4 (X)
    Wii U (X)

Both my favourite consoles atm - PS4 is quick, good looking, and will have some of the greatest games this gen. Wii U - well, Nintendo for me has some of the best varied games on any console and a great companion to my PS4.

    7th Generation
    PS3 (X)
    Wii (X)
    Xbox360 (X)

PS3 was played the most but I used Nintendo’s Wii extensively to play the many exclusives that Nintendo gave us. Xbox360 lasted only a couple of months with me (only played Forza 4).

    6Th Generation
    Dreamcast (X)
    GameCube (X)
    PlayStation 2 (X)

Dreamcast and GameCube were my all time favourite consoles and is when I began to hate Sony for crippling Sega. PS2 collected dust.

    5th Generation
    PlayStation (X)
    N64 (X)

Bought a launch PlayStation and loved to show off the T-Rex video and Ridge Racer to my mates. Enjoyed it until it faulted and when the replacement PlayStation faulted too, I opted for my first Nintendo console (after playing my mates Mario 64 game) the N64 and never looked back. Easily my favourite console then with plenty of fantastic games that kept me happy for a few years.

Before this I owned the Amiga CD32, Commodore 64, Texas Instruments TI-99/4A and my first venture into gaming started with Pong on Megnavox Odysey.

edit - also owned the monochrome version of Amstrad CPC464 (used for word processing only from 1991 to 93).

Ah, so you were the one who bought it ;)

    How was Microcosm :p

(I went for an interview for a dev job at Psygnosis while they were developing that - slagged it off a bit, didn't get the job :))

PMSL - yeh, it seems I was the only Britain who bought the infamous CD32 - I loved the Amiga games and Microcosm was a pile of camel poop  I only wanted the Amiga games - Pinball Dreams/Fantasies, Oscar, Super Frog, Zool, James Pond and many others.

You did right to slag off Microcosm lol it wasn't that good tbh.

I had the choice between a Dragon 32 or a Spectrum 16k, in hindsight I probably made a mistake there!
