    Not the same.
DVI is a much larger socket/plug but you can get an adaptor or a lead which will do HDMI-->DVI.

HDMI carries the same video feeds as DVI but also includes digital audio that DVI doesn't. It's the reason you can get a simple, cheap adaptor. All it's doing is passing the signals through to the appropriate socket type, but you'll still have to feed your audio elsewhere (which isn't usually a problem if you're using an A/V amp anyway).

On the other hand, DVI is also capable of carrying a full set of additional analogue video feeds (though it may not) hence the reason you can get cheap DVI to VGA adaptors. They too are just passing the analogue signals through to the appropriate socket type and ignoring all the digital stuff.

    Regards

    Mark

In laymans terms just buy a cable that has HDMI on one end, which you plus into your PS3, and on the other end of the lead it has DVI-I socket on it. They are readily available in all good stores that sell 'proper' cables

If I do that, how will I connect the audio for the PS3?

    Cheers

What eternaldark says is correct. But if you don't have a amp to plaug it into(doubtful but might not have) Sony will need to provide some sort of analogue output

    http://www.trianglecables.com/pof-733.html

    Would one of these work?

As I only have a DVI-I Audio In port I was hoping I could just use some form of adaptor if I bought a optical cable lead and then plugged that into the above adaptor and then into my tv would I get sound or not?

    Thanks

not sure if that will be any good or not, but you can pick up budget surround speakers with amps that will have a digital audio connection, and trust me will make the experience with games and movies that much better.

Surely the PS3 will support Component?

Yes. Has 2 HDMI ports, and multi AV out for analogue signals. By the look of it, AV out is compatible with existing PS2 leads...

would expect so, but component doesn't carry audio either, so either sony will release a cable that will have 2 phono sockets for sound as well, or again you'll need an optical sound connection.

Yep that would do the trick, but at the moment I don't know if PS2 accessories will work with the PS3

But sure something like that will be available at launch

Just the same as the official component lead. RGB connection for video, red and white connectors for stereo audio (or Pro Logic 2 if you have the appropriate receiver).

    Hi All,

It looks like my TV will support a HDMI to DVI converter but I am just wondering what I could use to get sound I dont really want to buy an amp or anything would just rather use my TV's speakers.

Would I be able to use phono leads or something?

    Thanks

    Andrew

I wouldn't worry mate, im sure sony aint daft enough to flog a console that only a few have the tv needed to play on it.

Unfortunately I cant see any connections such as DVI which is the only HD Connection my TV has. I guess the original component cable could work but not confirmed by Sony.

Also does anyone know if a DVI-D cable will work with a DVI-I socket on a TV as the only HDMI to DVI cables I can find are all with DVI-D on the end.

    Not looking good :(.

I'd be very surprised if the playstation 3 allows you to use old periphrals. Sony will be making a big loss on each console sold and cables, controllers etc etc are a great place to make some of that money back. Thats certainly the model that MS followed, I'd expect Sony to do the same.

I see no reason why you can't use existing cables. The PS3 has an 'AV out' as per the PS2. Though I suspect that it won't support HD via this connection type.

From PS1 to PS2 though, you could use your existing kit, such as pads, AV leads, etc. The prototype model of PS3 clearly shows an AV out that is exactly the same connection as that on PS1/PS2. In that sense alone, they have been really good. Nintendo do the same to be honest. Since the SNES, AV connector has been the same...

Bodes well in my opinion.

PS2 supports progressive scan, and GT4 supports 1080i, so I see absolutley no reason as to why 720p/1080i will not be supported through existing component leads.Let's face it, component is what you get as standard with Xbox 360 Premium pack. Never know, component as standard for the PS3 with option to buy your own choice HDMI cable sounds cool to me. Long have I waited for a console manufacturer to allow the user to use proper quality cabling instead of the cheap bits of plastic supplied.

To Original Poster: here's a solution, but I can't be certain it will work!

Use an HDMI - DVI cable for image
Use the standard playstation cable, that is likely to be in the box, for audio as it should have the stereo cables for you to connect to your tv.

Personally I can't believe there won't be others in your position, so it is almost certain that a cable will be made by someone that will allow you to use DVI and sound into your tv.

I hope that this is the case (and the fact that there are so many HDTVs in the US without HDMI is encouraging for this outcome). I also hope, like the Xbox 360, that PS3 will also support HD options over VGA.
