    Am I just being daft?

I got the Beatles/George Martin "Love" (the 2 CD set with DVD-Audio disc)for Christmas. My Panasonic DMR-E55EB says it plays DVD-Audio but if I connect with optical digital audio cable the manual says it will only play 2 channels.

I have somehow managed to get pseudo 5.1 (the amp - Marantz SR4200 does that to 2 channel sounds if you ask it to - and I think its getting the audio feed fromn the SKY box which the DVD palyer is also connected to).

My question: can I get the true 5.1 channel sound from a DVD-Audio disc with any combination of these two units?

I can't get it to play 5.1 on my DVD player either.

DVD Audio and SACD have to be played using analogue out (5.1 out to a amp with 5.1 analogue input.) and not digital out. Also, the early Panasonic DVD Recorders and Players that did DVD A only did 2 channel.

to get proper DVDA you have to connect via analogue. some DVDA discs have DTS or DD soundtracks that you can play via digital, but thats lossy sound compared to DVDA

    Ahh...thanks.

But how do I connect via analogue? There seems only usual 2 phono audio outputs as well as optical digital. Won't the analogue be just 2 channel?

    Thanks

Hello - This is my first post to the forum so hope it is of use .... I have had no problem playing either this disk in either DTS or Dolby Digital format! I have a SONY DVD player which feeds an ancient Sherwood AV receiver through an optical cable.

This may be a silly thing to ask but by default, the disk plays in PCM stereo - have you selected Dolby Digital or DTS from the setup menu?

You connect via the analogue 5.1 ouputs (like with SACD) but the DMR E55 only does dvd audio on 2 channel which is why you have only 2 channel analogue out. Proper 5.1 DVD Audio is not possible.

    Thanks nwgarratt.

I think that confirms what I suspected.

    Next question:

Anyone have a good retort to other half who asks "So, have you got yourself an expensive disc that doesn't work on your system then?"

Chances of TV upgrade receede slightly.
