Will I be able to select Dolby Atmos 7.1 if I only use a 5.1 set-up? (My amp does output Atmos and is 7.1, I just don't have extra speakers).

You will need a 5.1.2 for dolby atmos.

Your amp shouldn’t be set up for Atmos if you’ve configured it correctly so just play and enjoy.

What does that set up configure? My amp definitely does atmos.

So you can't select atmos if you don't have the right speaker set up?

You can select the Atmos track on the disc but any overhead stuff obviously won’t be played because you don’t have the Atmos speakers in place [emoji106]

Without the ceiling speakers your amp will decode the Dolby TrueHD core track, even if you select an Atmos mix on the disc. You cannot decode and play the object-based Atmos track without the ceiling speakers, as mentioned. It makes sense at Atmos is designed to build a 3D audio ‘bubble’ which is not really achievable when you don’t have a height channel to add that third dimension to the configuration.

Thanks everyone. I was just concerned that Atmot simply sounded better in general and didn't want to miss out.

To the OP - Atmos does sound better and it is worth investing in some extra speakers.

Upfirers which sit on top of your existing Front L&R (to create 5.1.2) and Rears (to create 5.1.4) is a compromise compared to in-ceiling speakers, but are easy to fit, look good and sound fantastic.

Most AV amps provide sound upmixing, which means even non-Atmos discs like DVD or games are recreated using pseudo Atmos and it really opens up the sound.

I can't imagine going back to just 5.1, it would just sound so small in comparison.

Not strictly true. You just need speakers connected to the height channels and the receiver configured for Atmos/DTS-X. These speakers can be at any height, even on the floor....

Yes, but it's the height gradient which creates the Atmos effect. Sure, you can place satellite speakers on the floor and assign them as Atmos speakers for example, if you want the helicopter to pass under you instead of over you. It will sound all wrong and opposite to what's on the screen. When setting up the AV receiver, you'll need to specify where the Atmos speakers are; on the ceiling or as height speakers on the wall.

Interesting conversation! I have a 7.1 configuration at the moment and just upgraded to a Denon AVR-X3400H amp which, although it supports Atmos, is limited to 7.2 and ad such I cannot just bung in another couple overhead speakers without changing the existing setup.
I'm thinking of repurposing the rear surround channels to overhead, but wondering if I can get away with their existing location which is in the reference position, but due to limitations in the room layout, placed at ceiling level and angled downward.

      Any thoughts?

Definitely upgrading to 5.1.2 soon - easy to do and relatively inexpensive as a bonus.

I’m sure if I installed proper in ceiling speakers, it would be a more enveloped experience. However, the front and rear heights in each corner of our living ceiling does a great job. The best disk I have used is the latest transformers and you can defo here the planes shooting over you :)

You seem to have missed the alluded point of my previous post (Dolby upfiring speakers).

Are you saying your rears are mounted as heights already?
If so, you can configure them as 5.x.2 without having to do anything else and see how they sound.

I feel I am missing out on atmos and have been thinking about buying some speakers. Does anyone have any suggestions for some upfiring speakers around the £150 mark?
My cousin is an electrician and could fit speakers but I feel this would be a lot of hassle,

You can use any speakers just point them upwards so the sound bounces off the ceiling. Only thing I've noticed is the room fills with audio, and is much more immersive. More fuller if you get what I mean.

I tried the onkyo upfiring speakers and they were rubbish; cheap and nasty in my opinion!

Take a look at this link, interesting:

Can I Use Regular Speakers as Dolby Atmos Upfiring?
