It was a bit of a bonus to find that my Sony DVP-S735D DVD player plays CDs, but a big disappointment to find that it won't play CD-R's. My old CD player plays CD-R's fine.

Is there a software hack or a hardware chip to get round this?

    Regards

I somehow doubt it, the ability to read different media like CD-R is usually a feature of the drive mechaism and in particular the laser.

Is it not reading a CD-R copy of a CD, or is it MP3 files that you are trying to play ?

Features like playing MP3 files might be added by firmware changes, but if it can't read a normal copy of a CD then you are unlikely to fix this.

    Mark,

Thanks for your comments. It's playing CD copies rather than MP3's that I had in mind, but I would be interested to know how I might play MP3 files. How would I do the firmware adjustment you mention ?

    Thanks

    Hi Michael,

As Mark says, if your DVD player can't read CD-Rs anyway, then it definately won't play MP3s as they come on CD-R discs. It's best to ascertain this first with a normal CD-R recording.

I've heard that some DVD players which can't read CD-Rs can play CD-RWs (re-writable). I'm not sure how true this is but it might be worth a try for the cost of a blank CD-RW.

    RDB :)

PS Sony DVD players are notorious for not playing CD-Rs but it seems to be OK on the DAV series for some reason.

The DVP S735D is not capable of playing MP3's.

As for CDR the only ones reported to work are Princo ones.

    However CD-RW do work.

    Hope that helps you.

    Bry,

Thanks for the advice, looks like I need some Princo blanks or a few CD-RW's.

    Thanks again for your help
