I've been toying with the idea of getting a Play TV box for my PS3. However I see on Amazon Play TV 2 (PS3): Amazon.co.uk: PC & Video Games that Play TV 2 is due out at some point.

n4g have it 'announnced' here.

Techradar discuss it here.

but I don't see anything 'firm' and all internet chatter discusses a late 2010 launch!

Any idea when it is coming and whether I should get the first one for £20 second hand and worry about its replacement in the future?

What are your thoughts? Does anyone have any additional info?:)

Play TV 2, in it's current form, was an update, from the PSN store..
Those articles are a year or so old, as is the Amazon link.
You can get the basic version for free, or pay for the "enhanced" update.

No word on an actual Play TV 2 unit at all, from anywhere legitimate, as other countries use the same freeview setup for HD broadcasts, but not here in the UK, no, we use DVB-T2, for that, and I can't see Sony releasing hardware just for us, we always get ****ed over.

The picture quality as is, is really, rather good, comparing it to my telly's inbuilt freeview, and the PS3's Play TV, it does look "HD" compared to the tv's version.

Thanks for that.

Is £20 a good price 2nd hand (from CEX - if that makes any difference?)

Was there a 'Facebook' update for it? What functionality does it give?

And I'm happy to pay (via the PSN - when it is working!) for an 'enhanced' service as long as it has functionality I want.

:)

£20's not bad..as cheap as a cheap freeview box.

The update contains:

Play TV is going to become an interactive experience with the great new ‘Chat TV' feature. Text chat with friends and other PlayStation Network users while watching live TV, and without interrupting your viewing. This feature is a great way of interacting with friends while you watch TV, and especially great during the football as you can banter with your mates without taking your eyes off the action.

The next new feature for PlayTV is a new premium programme guide (from ‘tvtv') that lets you Plan your TV viewing 7 days in advance. You can also find tonnes of information on programmes and movies, as well as discovering new things to watch by searching TV listings by genre, actors, directors, producers and more. (standard PlayTV programme guide in Australia)

You will also be glad to hear that PlayTV will be getting the much awaited feature in the UK, Series Link. Never miss an episode of your favourite series again. (Only available in the UK)

Following on from the community theme of the new PlayTV features, you will be able to send recommendations for your favourite shows to your Facebook wall and also any of your PSN friends. People will be able to comment on your Facebook recommendations or even set a recording for the show directly from the PSN recommendation.

The final new feature coming to PlayTV is designed to give you some added inspiration with ‘Community Favourites'. This feature lets you see what your friends and the PSN Community are watching and enjoying. So if you're ever stuck for something to watch then just check out what everyone else is watching. (Not available in Australia)

The above are for the pay version..£5 or £6 or thereabouts from memory..

I would buy a 2nd hand one for £20, and worry about the PlayTV 2 when it happens.

Well I came to work prepared today.

I took some old DVD boxsets I've already watched to CEX and managed to pick up...

1 x mighty mouse for my minimac
1 x Play TV (with unused Remote sticker)
1 x DJ Hero 2 (with free copy of DJ Hero 1 and a DeadMau5 t-shirt, but I'm not sure if this is still valid)

Not bad. I do love exchanging stuff I don't want for stuff I do - especially as they gave me £10 for my old wireless Apple mouse and the mighty mouse worked out as a billy bargain!
