Thought it was just my copy. Spot on about the sound. At the beggining theres a transporter in the background where you would expect all your speakers to be humming away but nothing. I've heard more hum from a hand fan! Then a bit later when there in the jungle and its raining. The rain suddenly stops for a couple of seconds on the left channel then comes back. Then shoot out, Ive heard more bang from a party popper! The surrounds are vertualy none existant and it all sounds a bit monual. This is utter crap. Never, never, never buy region 2 again!!! When will i learn. I was'nt going to buy it, its just that I saw it in Asda while shopping and caved in! Ahg!

i think there should be some kind of standard for sound an picture quality.quite frankly you are taking a gamble buying dvd`s 5.1 does not does not mean your getting the best sound you can.its a complete joke an i have had enough of being ripped off.i also would not recommend kingpin special edition i got that on region 1 an the sound is worse hardly any surrounds an most of it comes through the centre.maybe its just a MGM thing lol but seriously i didnt spend a small fortune on home cinema to find out that the discs are being converted so very poorly.good i hope i can find that asda receipt

    Hi Guys,

I agree that there are certain discs where you would think that the sound should be better than it is.
It can come down to a few things, firstly was it the original master, was there any remixing done, was the original release in Dolby Digital/dts/sdds.

I would safely say that Platoon was a Dolby SR theatrical release, meaning there is no DD master. So i would conclude that some kind of remix has been done to get 5.1 channels. I also know that Mgm have in the past released Dolby SR mixes as 5.1 but with low dynamics and mono surrounds.

I agree that in this day and age some more care needs to be taken when films are mastered for DVD, if they want the original directors vision and that is in mono then so be it, but if it is just to save money then vote with your wallets.

Having said all that the DVD mastering is getting far better than it used to be and studios are now more clued in that the consumer demands 5.1

We just want some class remixes please.

Finally got round to watching the end of this film and to prove my theory about the sound being crap I dug out the original VHS widescreen copy.
I put them both on at the same time and synced the audio. Flicking the audio on my amp from DVD to VHS inputs to my suprise they sounded very very simalar. Infact the DVD was slightly better. So in my opinion it was the original Theater mix thats the problem, its just not very good.
I think these days our standards of audio/video quality have reached new hights that old material can no longer reach.
Gladiator/Fifth Element sit at the pinacle of are expectations that all new DVD releases should equal.
Home cinema has come a long way.
