ive just watched platoon (reg2 special edition)
and was convinced my dolby decoder was at fault

the sound is just a joke.

within minutes of watching the film i fired up the pc
    and did a search here.
there were a few posts when the dvd was released
that thankfully these convinced me my kit is fine.

i just thought a few fresh opinions were needed.

    the picture quality is fine.

for a war film i was expecting the surround and sub woofer
to be used to the fullest

well. as for the sub i not sure it even warmed up.
and the surround , i thought the rear left
had developed a fault , and all left data was
being fed to left front as i heard that speaker
    far more than the others.

    any other thoughts.

I have the R1 SE edition. What chapters sound bad, and explain what is wrong... I'll check in the morning.

I did hear a while ago the R2 sound was messed up.

i found the fronts not balanced at all well.
too much emphasis on the front left.
whereas the rears are hardly used.
    advertised as a 5.1 edition.
not sure whether the rear left gets any use at all.
the reproduction at the editing stage is second rate.
some of the sound effects that are used
seem too loud (eg a background noise of
say someone walking nearby is overly empasized )
whereas when a helicopter flys overhead
it gets no attention at all. (sub use).

ive read a number of reviews this morning
and they all seem to comment on the sound
    as very poor.

shame. as its war films of this quality where i expect
home cinema to shine out and impress.

the thing is with platoon is that its an old film so its never gonna sound as good as a saving private ryan

its the same with films like aliens and the terminator

Aliens has a great mix, Terminator still very good considering the original was in mono- the 5.1 mix is excellent.

    thats my point

they are ok but they cannot compare to films suchs as the fast and the furious which were recorded with multichannel in mind

I agree with Darth and Nathan. Its all down to the sound mixer because as the lads said there are mono films with great 5.1 remixes never mind newer films with prologic 5.1 remixes. Whomever remixed Platoon should never be allowed sit behind a mixing desk again. I was expecting bullets bouncing around the back of the room, deep bass explosions etc etc. What we got was almost totally inactive rears, unbalanced fronts and downright sloppy sound editing. For instance there is one scene where for once all speakers are active producing a nice atmospheric rain storm with raindrops splattering all over the room. All of the sudden the camera angle changes and although its still p!ssing rain the rain sound effect has stopped. Its not even that there was some character dialogue which necessitated a lowering of the effects track. There was no dialogue in that scene!!

Its the more annoying because one of its four oscars was for best sound... You read that on the back and expect a bombastic feast. They might as well have just put the original mix on it.

    The Fast And The Furious.

The R2 copy of Platoon has bloody awful sound, one of the worst "5.1" mixes I´ve ever heard.:thumbsdow

Is the R1 SE edition OK? Hope it is.

Also noticed R2 Galaxy Quest sound is messed up, in the geeks convention it sounds tinny (the R1 version is fine)
