Not sure what forum to post this in but i've had alot of talk from salesmen telling me that plasmas are being phased out, and that they are old and inferior technology to LCD's.. Is there any truth to this?

(i appreciate that its partly them trying to make me spend more money)

Get a plasma for watching TV and DVDs. Get LCD if you are going to hook up PC. Word.

Sony are dropping plasma, they can't make any money out of it, due to no manufacuring of glass. So, they spread the word that plasma is useless. Does it make sense now?

I dont think LG is spending this sort of money to increase the production quality
and technology for nothing. :smashin:

I don't know what it's like in the UK but here in Australia plasma's are by far more popular than LCD and all this stuff about them being phased out is crap it's all what sony is telling us ( why would panasonic, pioneer, fujitsu and NEC be making more plasma than LCD if they where inferior and being phased out) tipical sony telling us crap because they lost in the plasma market.

panasonic have just opened a new plasma factory, but obviously when sony tell them plasmas crap theyll knock it down :D

Sony didn't lose the plasma market....they hardly entered it.

There's no way Plasma is being phased out.... yet!
Until SED makes it to the shops, Plasma remains the best CRT alternative for video.

When Plasma is phased out it won't be LCD that sees it off. Sony is talking out of its marketing bottom.

Since when did salesmen ever tell the truth ? Especially in Currys, Dixons or PC-World. The only thing they are worried about is their sales commissions, and they will tell you exactly what you want to hear.

I disagree.. I work in currys... I made the thread as an ignorant consumer so i'd get an honest opinion.. And because i actually don't know much about flat panel TV's.. Today for example i sold someone a cheaper (£150) camcorder because i knew it was so much better.. I can only speak on behalf of myself though..

All salesmen REALLY care about is extended warranties :suicide: Even though we dont personally make anything significant from them..

We know about warranty sales targets here. I personally make money from selling TADL warranties, but rarely sell them, as stuff rarely goes wrong. I have met some proper sales staff in Currys, tried to recruit one once, but he was only filling in a gap year.... Nick's statement is a bit sweeping I think.

I think sometimes people are a little unfair on these guys in currys, dixons etc, they are unexpected to be experts on a very broad range of products, I wonder how many of the specialists in this forum could pick out the fundimental differences in a range of camcorders, or comment on the energy usage comparaisons between washer x and washer y.

I know sweet FA about camcorders, hoovers, freezers, irons, CRT TVs, etc. Most of us have become specialists of one sort or another. I usually know nothing about my client's jobs. Considering how little they pay, it would be expecting an awful lot of a Currys employee to know all about every product.

they will be when sed come out

SED is in fact a quite an old technology (10 years +), in this time frame a lot of start up's have gone bust trying.
It still has a lot of technolgical challenges and requires hugh leap of faith for a manufacturer to make the absolute massive investments to make a real competition to plasma or LCD.
IMHO I wouldn't sit waiting and hoping on this to met your viewing requirements in the next five years.

LCD's
with
1. 3M viewing angle extension techology
2. scanned LED backlight with closed loop colour feedback control.
??

To be fair L11 I bought my Plasma and other items from Currys near Plymouth and they really were very good.....but the big companies such as Currys really should take a leaf out of Richer sounds book when it comes to extended warrenties....they really are how it should be done

Toshiba announced a while back that, once it got SED working, it would no longer make plasmas at all. Sony (I think) has also said that it is phasing out plasma in favour of SXRD rear projection. Other manufacturers, however, have not followed suit. So it's "sort of true" that plasma is being phased put. If the salesman worked for Sony or Toshiba, for example, it would be a fair statement.

And neither of those makers have ever made plasma glass..... Just been stitched up by other manufacturers for the privilege of using theirs.
