Is the 3.5m distance from the plasma or the wall behind the fireplace?

If the dimensions are 3.5m - 40cm for depth of fireplace then you will be sitting about 10 feet from the screen, just about perfect infact.

Go to a large currys and stand that far back to get a better idea but allow for the fact that the impact of the screen size soon wears off and before long you might wish you had bought a 50":D

Don't think you'll be able to see the tv from the adjacent sofa though, but you probably new that already.

I will have to give the plasma a miss. A little too big for the room.

I will buy a quality CRT TV.

    Any recommedations?

In my opinion if you have a 3.5m distance from a 42 inch plasma you should go for it. My 43" Pio screen is only just above this distance and it does not look big at all. On the other hand there are37" or so plasma screens available now you can consider (I see no point in the the 32" plasma screens).

Smallest/biggest so far being a 50" Panasonic we delivered to a young guy who lived at home with his parents.

The 50" display was set on a shelf at the end of his bed and he basically lay down on the bed to view the display.

Also have a look at this plasma product/installation if you have any worries about your viewing distance:

http://jacuzzi.com/ > products > (La Scala) > View all (to get to the spec sheet).

I've got a couple of quotes out on these units but not supplied one - AS YET!

    Best regards

    Joe

Your room will look a lot smaller with a crt in the corner than with a 42" plasma on the wall. The plasma WILL be watchable from the adjacent sofa by the way, they have large viewing angles and while it wouldn`t be your first choice sitting position at the end of the sofa nearest to the plasma it will still be o.k. I know because my set up is very similiar, infact I sit slightly closer to a 50" than you will be to a 42". Unless there is something else holding you back the size of your room should not stop you buying a plasma.

I will have to re-consider and look at my options with the Plasma's.

I reckon 3m is about perfect for my 43" Pioneer, so it would be more than adequate for a 42". The manual says you should be 3-6m away, but I ask you - what's the point getting a 43" plasma when you're going to sit 6m away from it! Why not just save some money - sit closer and buy a smaller one!!!

If you are concerned, try the 37"? You'll be closer to a crt cos of the box depth.
