As it seems very difficult to get a demo of the latest HD plasma's using SKY SD, can I record SKY footage, mixture of good, average & bad channels onto a DVD and use this to determine quality of picture by playing back in store?

How similar will this be to watching it live? Will I get the same artifacts etc etc

    Advice please?

JL in Wycombe are doing much the same - playing a Freeview demo showreel DVD which has lots of clips from programmes.

There are a few instances where the compression in the original source material was evident but more apparent that this was the extent to which production quality (brightness, etc) varies between programmes.
