currently looking at purchasing new tv and set up
was looking at rp but gone off the idea.

sony 36 inch crt is favourite but want to make sure i am not missing out on plasma

panny 37 or lc 42 seem to get good reviews.
My question is what else is required (cost wise) on top of basic screen,
    have sky, video at mom
looking to maybe add surround (1000 ish budget here)
budget for plasma and extras 3500 ish if possible to keep this low.
or do we stay for a few of years with the crt sony and a few quid in the bank and wait for plasma to be improve and decrease in price as they undoubtably will.

there will always be improvment and price drops so get one now,
i think for your budget you will get a panny 42 plus mount or stand,
for £1000 you will get your self a very decent sound system,
remember to put a bit to the side for cables and converters,

sky rgb to vga converter js tech seems to be the best ,about £130
you might get one on the classifeids. www.rgbtosvideo.com .

    scart lead and vga lead

    i paid £30 for a 2m thor and £51 for a 3m vandamme vga lead

for your vhs just a scart to composite lead

dvd does yours have component for the best results if not s-video

you will have to check if you can use both s-video and composite on the 5 series
