Plasma & HD 1280x720

What happens with the HD 1280x720 output of a scaler on a 1024x768 plasmascreen? Will it be 1024x720 or 1024x768 on this screen? But what about the proportions of the resolution?

Does a downscaled resolution looks better than the 720x576 (pal) resolution on this screen?

What plasma exactly, and what connection method, presumably this is the new iscan HD you are thinking of? 1280 x 720 will be scaled in both directions we'd hope! It will be sharper than PAL assuming it was HD before, otherwise the gain might be marginal, being scaled again by the screen. Tricky question, and when the iscan is actually with us, will be easier to answer by results.

The plasma is a Pioneer PDP-434HDE and the scaler would be a Pioneer DV-868 DVD-player, connected by HDMI.

The DV-868 has a 1280x720p and a 1920x1080i output.

The old chestnut then! Pioneer selling them as a match made in heaven, and the resolutions don't match at all. The screen will scale the input to match the screen resolution. If it's a 16:9 DVD like say shrek, it will be scaled to 1024/768, but of course taking the fact that the pixels are not square on this screen. I think their maths is better than mine, it gives me sleepless nights thinking about it.
