Plasma gas charging fault

With a black ( or do I mean grey ) screen displayed with no image my screen is jet black at the sides with a very definite edge to it and then cloudy in the centre, this does not change no matter how much I adjust the brightness or contrast.

Exactly the same as my 400e.
I'll try and take a photo .If it works , will post it.
Daran.

The fault or 'feature' with my screen was visible from day one, although it is only visible when viewing a dark screen in a dark room. I'm guessing you either have it or you don't, it probably won't develop. If you have a set delivered and it has this 'feature' then just send it back for a refund. Under distance selling regulations you have 30 days to do this.

I tried to photograph the effect, but because it's only visible in the dark the picture didn't come out too well, I'll post it this evening though.

Thanks Elvis we've not noticed anything so far so hopefully it will be ok, I hope you manage to get yours sorted out eventually.

Mrs Brethy

I first noticed the problem about a month after I purchased the screen and it does not appear to have deterioated further.

I therefore suspect it was there from new.

To check the panel the room needs to be as dark as possible and the screen set to display a solid (or it should be) black image. I did this by either using an AV input that was not in use or by pausing a DVD at an appropriate point.

If your screen is uniformly black you should be ok.

The mistake I made was waiting to see if it would go away... It didn't. If I'd sent it straight back to JL and got a refund I could have either purchased another one or bought a different make of screen. It never occured to me that they might dispute the 'fault' if it didn't clear up.

No good you cant see it in the photo.

I also think that the problem is there from day 1. I use to think it was something to do with the video source, But after upgrading this and that the picture got better but the problem stayed the same.

Has anyone noticed it getting worse ?? I don't think My panel is, but because i know it's there i keep getting distracted by in now.

Thanks Michael I'll get hubby to check it on one of the unused inputs, I really hope you all get sorted out, it's quite worrying if this is the level of Hitachi's "customer care".

Mine has been the same from when I first had it, It doesn't change, it just seems to be that way, doesn't spoil my enjoyment though.

I have attached the photo I took of my Hitachi TV. Apologies for the poor quality, but the 'cloud' is only visible in the dark, and that makes it difficult to photograph. I had to brighten it up a bit in photoshop, but it should give you an idea of what this phenomenom looks like.

As you can see there is a large light patch in the centre of the screen. Apparently this is normal.

Thanks for the photo.

That is almost identical to my screen.

I also perhaps should have acted sooner but hoped it would improve or I would hardly notice it. However, once I was aware of the problem like Daran I began to notice more and now find it is very distracting.

Good luck tomorrow.

Michael

That's exactly what mine looks like as well. I have to be honest and say I'm not really that bothered about it. As I said before last night was the first time I've ever noticed it in almost 8 months of ownership - the buzzing from the back was vastly more annoying although a transformer change has done the trick with that one.

Elvis,
Thanks for the picture. Exactly the same problem as me. At least we know now we are all talking about the same 'PHENOMENA'. I think you hit the nail on the head when you said that you'd waited to see if it got better , i did the same but it didn't.
Such a pity as this display has a spot on picture in all other departments.
Regards,
Daran
P.S I'm still waiting for someone to collect mine.(what the want it for is beyond me as I've had engineers around and they have told me it,s a problem with the panel 'nothing can be done) :(

I've just realised the name of this thread doesn't really describe it's contents. Is it possible to re-name it 'all Hitachis are f**cked?'

You guys have my sympathy. Only other option, if there is no recourse is check your accidental damage home insurance policy.

You may have dropped it accidentally and could be covered.

Accidents do happen.

And also beware that this applies to genuine cases of accidental damage I do not promote fraud.

I'm comitted to finding a legal solution to my woes. I'd rather not add fraud to the equation, but thanks for the suggestion anyway. :)

Pardon the pun - I worded it as such that its a grey area :)

And allowed the reader to pass judgement on the second idea.

The first option I agree is over stepping the mark and, as such, I would not advise anyone to pursue - I will edit it;-)

Elvis I have sent u a PM.

As you know my first screen had this exact same issue. I was not ahppy and reported it to J.Lewis straight away. I have to say they were excellent and got the engineer from Yorkshire Multimedia services out right away.

I was not impressed with these huys tho, they did not have a clue. I don't know everything about home cinema but am like most people here an enthusiast and know more than people who aren't into it. these guys did not have a clue, they came to put it into test mode but did not know how to put it into test mode. Then I rang them back as this didn't fix it, this time they took it away for further testing. When it came back it was exactly the same. I asked what they did and he told me they had done further diagnostics that they could only do in the lab and they could find no fault. I actually found out that all they had done was put it in test mode for 3 days.

Phoned JL in sheffield and they were happy to get it swapped and did so in the week before Christmas, I dont know if they would have responded they same if I had had it a while.

The engineers don't know what they are looking for as they are not plasma specialist they are just standard engineers. Insist JL get it swapped under gurantee and qoute my name if needs be.

Can somone with the same screen who does not have the problem respond. It will be interesting to see if everyone has this.

Good luck chaps!

Hi Marshy.dave,
Thanks for the PM. how long had you had your set when you returned it BTW?

I would agree that the service agent is not too hot. In order to duplicate the fault I reported with my screen they put a blanket over their heads to make it dark... very high tech. Other than that it was just a case of screen wipes and test modes, which I'd already tried and told them it didn't work, a waste of time.

My problem now is that Hitachi themselves have seen the set and pronounced that it is not faulty so if JL replace my set they can't pass on the cost to Hitachi, but I see that as their problem not mine. I have had a lengthy debate today with JL about the sale of goods act and it's application in my instance and I'm now waiting for a response from a more senior manager. I don't hold out much hope of a positive resolution though so I'm considering how (or if) I should take things further.

Hi all
These grey blobby plasmas arnt the same 1s offered in that now famouse 'Curry Plasma' deal r they?
Suspicious mind me! or is that just a song from afar Elvis

Mine looks fine m8 not a mark that i can see

I've finally hit a brick wall. JL have told me they will not replace my set because I've had it too long, (even though more than two months went by whilst waiting for the service agents to turn up and look at it) so much for their legendary customer service. I've pretty much been in told that if I want to take it further I will have to contact the likes of the CAB or Trading Standards. So it would appear I either dig in for the long haul or accept my lot and learn what I can from the experience, ie: never mind the advertising slogans nobody gives a sh*t about the customer.

It will be interesting to see how everyone else gets on. Perhaps if enough of us are unhappy we can band together and blow a giant raspberry in the face of these retail nazis. or something.

if you can huck it up to a pc why not do that and run some color test on it then you will see if its only on the black if it is then you can try to PLAY with the settings to the point that you can not realy see it are @ lest try to get it looking better

It dose not matter what settings you play with the 'PHENOMENA' is still there .It is unaffected by any adjustments.
Daran.
